Reviewing WordPress Automatic Upgrade Plugin!

December 12, 2008 / 8 Comments

Howdy Buddies! I just upgraded from wordpress 2.6.5 to wordpress 2.7 some minutes ago and its too damn cool this new version of wordpress. I saw the new wordpress version while I was moderating some spam comments in Yusha’s blog and decided that I should upgrade too.

wordpress 2.7

This post is not about reviewing the new wordpress 2.7 but I want to talk about how I easily upgrade to the new wordpress in less than 5 minutes!! The magical tool I used is the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin. I found a very nice review of wordpress 2.7 here which you can have a look at.

I downloaded this plugin but was hesitating to use it. I was wondering what if in the middle of the upgrade process something bad happen.. but then I decided to go on with the upgrade and it worked. From what i read, wordpress 2.7 already have its own integrated upgrade option but for those only previous versions of WordPress can find it a time consuming work to upgrade manually. So this plugin will be very useful for those who have not yet upgraded.

wordpress27

The plugin uses 8 basic steps to upgrade your wordpress files.

  1. Backs up the files and makes available a link to download it.
  2. Backs up the database and makes available a link to download it.
  3. Downloads the latest files from http://wordpress.org/latest.zip and unzips it.
  4. Puts the site in maintenance mode.
  5. De-activates all active plugins and remembers it.
  6. Upgrades wordpress files.
  7. Gives you a link that will open in a new window to upgrade installation.
  8. Re-activates the plugins.

You do not need to do anything except clicking next and download the backups when the plugin ask you too and this took only 5 minutes here to upgrade to the new version 2.7! That’s a little piece of genius codes created by techie-buzz.com.

While the upgrade process is being done, the plugin automatically place your blog in maintanance mode while the update process completes. Backups of files and database are made automatically for you and you are given a choice to even download a copy of the backups to your desktop.

Positive points from me:

  • Backups are done automatically and stored on your hosting server.
  • Uses only about 2 to 3 Mb of bandwidth as oppose to the greater amount needed for a manual update. For those on hosting with limited bandwidth (eg free host) this is an advantage.
  • Automatically deactivate and reactivate your plugins after update is done.
  • No need to change any file’s permission

Negative points:

  • No rollback option available if you want to get back to an older version of WordPress.

As for on my side I am feeling NEW lol. Feeling a new sort of feeling to blog with my totally new wordpress layout and functionalities :D

So what do you think about wordpress 2.7? Have you already upgrade to the new version? Hmm.. I am missing my super blogspot a bit too however. Well it was time to move on. By the way… who want two free tickets for Christmas Live Party at Lakepoint??? :-) I have two free sponsored tickets for you buddies. Keep in touch as I will be organising another cool contest tomorrow where you will have the chance to win the two free tickets! More information…tomorrow.

No need to disable plug-ins while upgrading :) the new version is really cool, however if there was an Ajax feature in the menu’s it would have rocked

I don’t use the Blogger editor ever since I discovered Windows Live Writer. It also works with WordPress. :)

    @Yusha: Simplicity is better :P

@Carrot: I feel so too…when it come to ease of use and speed.. I am still trying to adapt to wordpress and it takes me longer to write a post as I am used to the blogger style dashboard :S

However on the side of customisation wordpress rocks.. But I feel even blogger is becoming highly customisable now.

@WDB: Totally missed that :P Thanks for adding. I was really amazed by the efficiency of this plugin and thats why I decided to write about it and link back to the coders site too.

I’ve been using WPA Upgrade for quite some time. It is really simple. One thing you forgot to mention, or did not come by, is does not only automatically upgrade your WP files but also your WP plugins. All done and cleaned in a few clicks. One of the most interesting plugins out there.
