Blogs That You Read – The Why And The What!

January 22, 2009 / 20 Comments

Wooooooo… My home thermometer is indicating 34 degrees celcius!! Its doing so damn hot since some days here! I have already had 2 whole jug of chill juice since the last hour. I really hate this heat and the sun! Please you people in cold countries… you don’t want to take some of our sun and give us your snow??

cut the sun and heat

Coming back to today’s issue, since yesterday I was thinking about why I read certain blogs and what do I like in these blogs that I keep reading them?

Many of you read many blogs. I wont ask you which type of blogging style that you like however. Today’s topic is what do you like in those blogs and why do you keep reading them? Let’s take for example Island Crisis. You read it why? Which is the thing that you like and what do you expect? This is the question. On my side, in fact all blogs that I read are in my rss reader. So I most of the time read the post from the reader and then go to the blog page to leave a comment if I have to say something.

Now since I have been reading blogs, there are some which I read once or twice and then never went there again while there are some which I still follow and read as they publish something new. So you will ask what are the factors that affected those decisions? Before I answer this question, there is something I wanna talk about. I guess you have heard about those VERY POPULAR blogs such as Life Hacker, Shoe Money, Pro Blogger, Daily Blog Tips, John Chow..etc etc.

most popular blogs

Those blogs make damn LOTS of money every month with their advertising. You won’t believe it but Life Hacker Shoemoney made over $130000 with just these adsense ads that I even use here last month!!! Yea $130000 !!! And you know how many visits Life Hacker got in one month? 33 MILLIONS!! While we s*ck here to reach the 500 daily, he made about 1 million visits per day! Check this article which Sachin send me the link to read.

Now what I want to talk about is that I feel that MANY PEOPLE read blogs. Ok thats great! But its also true that most people who read the blogs tend to read blogs who are already very popular like Life Hacker. Its like… “well the world read it so we read it too” na? Great logic! I don’t have any grudge against those blogs. They are very professional when it comes to their marketing but does this mean that all new bloggers are not up to their level?

follow the ass

I’ll tell you something. John Chow is a damn very popular blog. Great! But his article sucks! That not great! I won’t hesitate to also say it that there are many medium to small bloggers who write far much better stuffs than those popular blogs! But since its like they already got a name, so people will read THE NAME! They will not read the real content!

I am not saying that Life Hacker, Daily Blog Tips and the others do not write good stuffs. They do write good things but I just don’t feel that I should hesitate to say that THEY ARE NOT THE BEST! Yea its true. There are much more other bloggers out there who do write good things.

Now coming to why I stick to a blog. Infact I am not a regular reader of Life Hacker even if there are some good stuffs there simply because I prefer a blog post written by a real blogger than reading 10 commercial post written by a panel of paid bloggers for a blog!! I prefer blogs who have a daily real original and interesting content. From time to time however I do check these blogs too if there is something that interest me. However its not like I have to read it everyday because the world follow it lol. Another thing is where do I leave a comment?

say something

Well I usually read all you guys blogs from the rss reader and come to your page to leave a comment when I have something to say. Now the question where do I leave a comment? Well you know as a blogger you should always make the person who leave a comment on your blog feel that you read and appreciate his comment. So the best way to do this is to always read and reply your commentators. I for instance always try to answer everyone who leave a comment on Island Crisis. I may miss some of you at times when I am really in a hurry and just approve the comments but the other time I usually reply to all of you.

So even when I went to comment on a blog, I expect that the blogger show that he actually read his commentators comments. What I hate on very popular blogs, is that for a single post there are 100 different person leaving 100 different comments and the blogger don’t even care to reply the commentators! Also why should I leave my opinion among over 100 comments when no one will actually read it? So when I visit a blog, I first have a look if the blogger actually reply to his commentators and this is point 1! Now I will comment if the post interest me. And mostly all of you who I visit you blogs, and I leave a comment, then know that the post is interesting lol.

Also nowadays most blogs are using the Top Commentators widget which show the top commentators and this also encourage some people to actually leave a meaningful comment. Comments are like the vitamins of a blog.

So to conclude this, I like blogs which interest me with their content but also where the blogger is actually HUMAN and not a PAID BOT lol. I don’t care whether your blog does not have a beautiful template, I dont care whether your english is bad and I dont care whether you are a new blogger. What I care is that if you write interesting stuffs and is original then I will read and even comment. Looks and age does not matter to me in this case. Its the content that matter.

Also I prefer blogs where the blogger write his own stuffs and not make people to write for him! If I needed to read articles that THE PEOPLE write then I read a newpaper!

So you buddies.. what are your view? Why do you read a bloga nd which type of blogger do you like? And where and why do you leave a comment? Are you just another fan of the already paid content blogs or do you like actual bloggers blog? Share you opinion.

Your posts are not that long, its your style. I’ve got my style, writing huge slabs and quick short posts that are really small, that’s why I’ve set up the mini blogging part of my blog. The other thing on yours would probably be the cutting down of topics. In this post you actually have 3 major topics that would have given 3 different posts. Those would have been shorter and would have given you 2 more posts therefore incentive to the reader to come back.

Well i dont agree too much on the thing where you said the the one who came first will actually be favored and be the best.

:p i don’t agree on that also, but it is like that… unless you do twice the effort :p

Well, I do have a huge list of RSS feeds in my FF and I use the Boox plugin which highlights new posts. I just check my list every now and then and if something’s interesting, I’ll read the whole post.

Most of the blogs I read are those gravitating around my field of work and some friends’ blogs. Otherwise I just use the different blogrolls I find here and there. Reading blogs is just to elope some minutes from work before diving in again.

I don’t really make a difference between Big blogs or Amateur blogs. Its just, as Shah said, the content that matters.
