Private Tuitions Stigma and Students Strike January 2009

2009/01/26 - By Kurt Avish - 418 views

So from the latest news, the different student groups have been united and shall proceed with the illegal manifestation on the 30th of January at Plaza! Yea illegal as from what I see on the facebook walls of these groups, some students are even swearing at the Education Minister and the Prime Minister and also waiting impatiently for the event to do some public property damages!

student strike jan 2009 mauritius

The topic of today is mostly about Private Tuitions. However a brieft about this manifestation to you students! You ought to know that you must have the permission from the commissioner of Police to perform a public manifestation which I assume you don’t have!

Second point: The silence that you are hearing about this manifestation is not a good one. So expect some real bashing from the Anti-Riots police squad if things goes wrong..which most probably will! And don’t forget that once you got a nice remark with the cops for riots, then forget about university!

Point 3: Some students on the previous post mentioned that they have money to spend on private tuitions and where is our problem in this. They also mentioned that school teachers are useless. I’ll answer you kid that if you got so much money to spend at tuitions, then simply stop using the free education services provided by the government and go only to private tuitions if you dont learn anything at school! Fair or not? You will reduce the traffic jam lol.

And finally point 4: Many students said that they dont have enough time for recess. So its simple, don’t want to use the additional 30 minutes to do something useful then go on to increase the recess time to one hour!

So we come back to our topic of the day which is Private Tuitions in Mauritius. Since many years, we Mauritians have been feeding and nourishing this ugly society culture of Private Tuitions! These tuitions have become a sort of MUST nowadays in the mind of students. It is like a harmful drugs which has already brainwashed our students and also the parents!

I want to say something. Education is free in Mauritius. Students do not pay school fees and even transport for students is free. The only expenses are for the books which are bought once a year and the stationaries and some clothes. These are normal fees.

However the whole brainwashed Mauritian society keep complaining about how expensive education is! Why? The root of this EVIL of our society are SOME TEACHERS who make a business out of tuitions! It has become like a MUST for students to go to private tuitions after school hours.

The Truth! – Read It To Your Brain Students!

  • Tuition teacher are the same school teachers! There is nothing magic! If the teacher is dumb at school, logically he should be dumb at tuition! If its not the case, then the teacher is a FRAUD without any shame!
  • School time ends at 15:00 – With tuitions it ends at after 18:00!! Students are themselves making a slave out of them!
  • If a student work hard at school, he can even play and enjoy HARD after school! No need for tuitions!
  • Students… Your school teacher does not work at school? So you got one of the FRAUD and shameless teacher. So instead of paying a teacher at private tuition, make your lazy teacher to work or get him banned! I wont tell you how to do it. You know very well since you students know how to make a manifestation!
  • If you are one of the type of students who do not work at school and depend on tuition, then simply stop wasting valuable government resources at public school and get your mom to pay only the tuitions for you!
  • Taking private tuition with a teacher who work at RCC or RCPL or QEC will not make you a laureate! They are government teachers who keep shifting colleges! A teacher working at a private college like Hamilton can be a better teacher than one at Royal College Port Louis! I was there only some years ago and nothing has change till now so I know!
  • Teachers with big names are just business! Teachers doing those tuition business are only simple guys having a damn BSC or MSC in very rare cases! They have nothing so supernatural to make you intelligent.
  • If you really need tuition because you are weak in a specific subject , go only for that subject. No need to take tuitions for the whole course!

The Truth About Many Teachers!

  • Some work hard at school but many work like a goat at school only to encourage students to go for private tuitions!
  • They are not agreeing to the 30 minutes additional as they are idiots who dont even know how to make this 30 minutes goes to your advantage!
  • They are purposely not doing anything worthwhile in the 30 minutes additional to make students feel annoyed and go for a strike as they cannot do it themselves!

money is evil

Private tuitions! Many parents have to keep up to Rs3000 per student per month for those tuitions! And then people complain about lack of money?? The root are teachers! But also many students and parents who keep supporting this tuition thingy! If every parent change their mentality and stop this tuition addiction, other parents who are making a slave out of themselves just so that their kid can compete with the others will enjoy a better life! In foreign countries, there are no private tuitions stuffs! And buddies, let me tell you something, private tuitions do not make a student more intelligent or will help him to pass exams if he does not study by himself too!

There are many students who are even arrogant with their school teachers who want to work! And this is also another reason why school teachers do not work. Those students are arrogant as they take tuitions with BUSINESSMEN!! Yea businessmen..i mean those nest tuitions teachers!

What is more absurd is that for example a tuition of Physics, the parent has to pay a fee for the tutorial, another fee for the lab practicals and now if the teacher also do a revision class, its another additional fee!! Stop this fraking system and learn to be real students. Our students are spoon fed and when they reach the university or even work level, they are like LOST PANCHUS in the city lol!

So buddies what are your views on private tuitions? Should it be abolished? Or what about a law allowing private tuitions only on Weekends ONLY for those who really want it? How about imposing a limit on the amount of tuition a teacher can give? Share your views. Is private tuition a waste and also a stigma on our everyday home economy?

im gna “partly” agree on this one. yes.. some teachers make business out of education, but there are some very good teachers!! why do i take tution?? (for cretain subjects) simply because the school teacher i have to that subject SUCKSSSS!! that was the case for physics since form 4 to HSC for me. I took tuition from a better teacher because i didnt have the chance to get a good school teacher some subjectss. HELL YEA! I AM JUDGING them. and some teachers really suck! they arent stupid people, they are mature and they know what they are doing. So there are type type of teachers, those who work only for money, and those who work for their principles..

So.. on this note.. im gna partly agree to avish. Private tution has a “GOOD” side too.

ahan.. avish these are my idea! :) i will need a percentage in return for these idaes!! hah!
well, these point are well said. we need to make this information reach a maximum number of college students.

hey avish, you aware that many lecturers at university say that the uni students are not well prepared for the work settings! know why?? because we have a weak foundation!! we have been trained to be shits from secondary school. not just brain washed but brain drained! i hope the next generation learn from it and do not make the same mistake.

you know what? if this manifestation goes though.. the next action of the government would be to officially ban private tuitions. you had want it, you will get it!

tuition is a business… my accounts teacher does not work at any schools, he has 4 batch monday-friday, 11 batch on saturday and 5 batch on sundays…lets consider an average of 340 rs and at least 35 students per batch that make you 476000 but lets us consider that he make it 300k per month so? The tuition room is a real luxury…ac,spacious, library, computers, wifi etc… bzw he drives a bmw x5, real beauty..what curves :D

    i completely agree wid u..

but the question that we av 2 ask is whether or n0t we’ll b able 2 change this mentality of teachers, students and also parents..

The students and parents can change their mentality..but will the teachers agree o lose that xtra money they r gettin by givin private tuitions??
    n it’s n0t a small am0unt that they r gettin huh..
and if private tuitions r abolished..it might become kind of an illegal business as every parent wants his or her child 2 b very g0od..among the best..
and if the child complains, the parent will surely want 2 pay for private tuitions..
and in such cases the fees will increase even more..

to b frank with you..i took private tuitions when i was still at skul..n it really helped me..u can try ur best at skul..try to make the teachers work..
but if thoz teachers av no love 4 the work they r d0in..they make u hate that subject..n i’v been through that..

at school u av no ch0ice..u av to accept the teacher u av been allocated..
but while takin private tuitions..u can ch0ose..
if u dnt lyk 1 teacher..u can jass go to another 1..

I do think that the majority of teachers in private tuitions pay you more attention than those in Government Schools(Perhaps because you pay ‘em). I’m not saying that every teacher in Government schools is a ‘Laissez-allez’, there are some good ones as well as bad ones. Also applies for private tuition teachers.

@Secondary students: After analysing the issue, i’m convinced you are not to be blamed. i also convinced myself that the terrorist also are not to be blamed. that was how the terrorist were brought up and to their nature they have to create terror. noble.
same about college. the system is such, the culture is such. so i cannot swear at you for you are following something that has been going on for so long.

but just for your info and your valuable future, you wont be taking tuition at tertiary level. even if you want to take tuition, you will barely have time to. at tertiary level tuition is regarded as SpoonFeeding! And spoonfeeding is as bad as plagiarism in the eyes of the lecturers. so,just some free tips, start learning by YOURSELF – research and read by your own and DO GROUP WORK with your friends! it suffice, and you know wht? you save your poor parents’ money in this recession period! bingo?

And i can see some TEACHERS have replied above by HIDING in the skin of the STUDENTS. LOL.. Cowards!!

Why Private tuition is a business? Why teachers do Not perform well at school but excellent at tuition?? you have to be good in maths for this: (lol)

    on average:
    30 students per batch
    12 batches – 3 for form4, 3 for form5, 3 for lower, 3 for upper.
    Rs 300 per student!

    tuition revenue for teacher = 300 x 30 x 12 = Rs 108,000.
    -in 1 month: Rs 108,000.
    -in 1 year(10 months): Rs 1,080,000. <– thats 1 million??!
-10 year(on average teacher been giving tuition): Rs 10,000,000. (oh thats Rs 10 million!)

Students!!! You are giving these teachers FREE LOTTERY when EDUCATION should have been FREE!
You might have noticed that most student taking tuition do not achieve good results. so.. is it worth it?

Lets REBEL Against TUITION.. Lets REBEL For FREE EDUCATION!

@Swt-Huny-Bee and Tushal: I used to know a teacher who gave free tuition. But really these are very rare. He would normally not take any money with his students and student decide how much they want or can pay him if they want.

@swtAngel: Maybe you missed or didnt read the article as a whole. We didnt categorise all teachers as the same. Only the lazy ones…those who dont work at school and as a result students are forced to go for paid tuitions.

@Ibilis: Well thats a side of the issue which is a real problem. Transport is the real problem and I think schools should have enough school buses (around 15)…i mean real compfortable buses here and not those uncomfotable tin boxes

@swtangel: Thanks. No no I amnot contradicting myself. I clearly mentioned that SOME teacher… the lazy ones. Well why i said mere… you know my friend, these days I am seeing people with BSc who are not getting the job that they want.. People with MSc working for the job of a BSc holder. I know some people who keep saying that BSc hold no values now. Well this does not mean that students must not complete their BSc! But its no more like so exclusive as before now as everyone got a BSc… am getting mine soon though :-) It is like in the old days people who had a CPE was a great thing…then came when having an HSC was a big thing… then came the BSc era lol. Now if you want to stand out of the crowd…you should work out on the MSc too.

Well said Avish! Teachers (mostly all) r just too lazy in Mauritius. N they do make a big fortune with private tuitions. When I was at college (state secondary school), I was part of a social club n we often had interactions with students coming from private colleges, like bocage etc. I could clearly see how narrow minded students from state schools were compared to private school students. It’s coz in private schools they have the “luxury” of participating in many extra curricular activities. It’s a pity that when we were just about to enjoy this “luxury” too, some silly students went to rebel. How can we expect that the next generation will be more open minded when we see the behaviour of these students?
