The Chaos Around The New Mauritius School Ending Time
My buddy Tushal started this topic some days ago about how some students were going on strike due to the new college closing time here in Mauritius some days ago. Yesterday Priscus wrote with some more details about this situation with a snapshot showing some college students roaming around after school hours. Read more here.

Lets look into the real chaos and the inside of this supposed to be problem in the education field of the country which is being powered by the narrow minds of some college teachers and also the already infected college students!
Lets look into this very hot matter from the different perspectives. We first start with some of the lazy teachers!
Those dudes do not want to work till 15:00 – So as you all know till now the official school hours at almost all schools were from 8:00 to 14:30 – Right? Now they have to work till 15:00. This is a small 30 minutes additional. The LAZY teachers( am not saying all of them) of the states colleges are saying that they have to prepare a new working sheet for the additional HALF hour and also its a waste of time.
However one important point: They were not complaining when they were proposed the increase in salary!
Consider this case:
People in states offices start to work from 8:45 to 16:00 and states teachers start from 8:00 to 14:30 at the actual timing. So as you can see teachers start to work 45 minutes before the other states workers. So they also have the right to end 45 minutes before the states office worker. If we remove 45 minutes from 16:00 it reaches 15:15 – Ok? But they were ending at 14:30! So now even if the 30 more minutes is added they will end at 15:00 – So? What are they bluffing around about injustice?!
Don’t come to tell me that they work so damn hard! Most of those lazy teachers who are complaining are the one who glue themselves in class and are complaining because… BECAUSE… they want to go home early to GIVE PRIVATE TUITIONS! Yea for those international readers reading this post… In Mauritius we have an ugly culture-like after school tuitions! The same teacher will lurk around at school and then give no choice to student than to depend on private tuitions! Here in this fra*ing country, a typical last level college students takes approximately 5 to 6 private tuitions! And this ugly system is being supported and maintained..why? Because students are only doing what some money minded teachers want!
I am sorry if I am rude on this topic but I am! But I am not generalizing all teachers. This part concerns only those fatty acidic teachers who just run around at school and are always in a hurry to go home to start their tuitions!
Now coming to the Students part! So what we are hearing, students from different states college around Mauritius have been doing strikes and manifestations since some days now and they do not want to stay at school till 15:00 – Great! But you know what greater? Keep reading and I’ll tell you. As usual I wont damn hesitate to mention your college names when you do something bad!
3 HEURES NOU PAS OULE!!!
Translated to english: We don’t want to end at 15:00!!! Thats the slogan that many immature kids are singing around during their strikes everyday which is being POWERED by those lazy teachers at school! Those teachers are encouraging and USING those students and encouraging them to keep on with the strikes. Why? Simply because the teachers will not do a manifestation as they fear for their job! They will be fraked out of the education sector if they do it! So as usual and as we all know how easily those college kiddies can be manipulated, they are having fun to keep doing their stupid strike.
Some colleges which were very active at those manifestations:
- SSS Gaetan Raynal
- Maurice Cure SSS
- La Gaulette SSS
- Eden College
- Droopnath Lallah
- John Kennedy College
And many other colleges.. As usual some of the names mentioned above are always seen where there are some sort of unwanted events to take place!
So the main points being mentioned by these student to not accepting the school ending time are:
- Transport Problem to reach home
- Late to reach PRIVATE tuitions after school
- Its too much time at school and they have nothing to do
- And some even said they need time to WANDER around after school and tuition starts!
The photo shown above is one taken yesterday Friday 23 at the newly opened KFC Vacoas. So answering point 4 of the above: Yea student do wander around after school! And the time was after 16:00 – So I can’t understand why they keep whining about that they will be late for this or that if school end at 15:00 when at after 16:00 there are much students still roaming around. More… go and have a look at those bus terminals… we have a daily students-pollution till after 16:00! And they are crying like babies when the government is asking them to stay at school for an additional of 30 minutes.
Answering Point 3 of the above: They have nothing to do! Great! Our youngsters do not know how to make the most out of their time then! Thats the only conclusion I can get! I would suggest that colleges use these additional 30 hours to do something useful but also relaxing! Like lets say on Mondays and Tuesdays, do a library session! Make those students read! Do group discussions about everyday news and current issues! It will be fun and also good to develop their general knowledge.
On Wednesday and Thursday.. use this 30 minutes to do computer labs session! Its funny and also shameful to see that SOME 20 years old citizen of Mauritius to not even know what is a blog or what is wikipedia! Frak! Many students do not know anything except FACEBOOK!! They are IT retards? Not exactly but they do not use the web as it should be used. So go and use these time to surf on the web learn new things!
On Fridays, use the 30 minutes to make something fun. Like the teachers can organise small fun games and also reward the winner with something nice like a kfc coupon lol. Well any original idea. Do some optical illusion slide shows, quiz, funny or even TABOO talks! Talk about sex education.
Answering Point 2: Late for private tuitions! WTF! I say stop going to these private tuitions itself! I was a student too. I took no tuition till form 5! Form 6 I started to take some tuition but finally stopped after 2 months! Yet I got damn good results! Tuitions is nothing magic! Its something that students of this country have been tolerating and also promoting!
Private tuition is needed ONLY if a student has some problem on certain subject! And the student go for a private tuition to better understand what he could not on the first tutorial. However, this is not a must! If students do not understand something in class, they got to ask the class teacher! No need to support those lazy teachers. Because those same teachers who play the lazy at school, those same teachers will SQUEEZ out students money to do the same thing in private tuitions!
If you teacher is playing the lazy at school… so wake up and wake him up! I did it when I was at school! I made two teachers to start to work! Frak them and do a scandal that the teacher is not working! If you ask him for help and he do not help.. so no need to behave like a small girly! Raise your voice and tell the thing out!
So I feel so ashame of this country’s students when I see that they are so happy to go on strike and is being manipulated by teachers! I am so sure that out of 1000 student doing the manifestation, 800 of them do not even know the whole story! They are participating… why? Because their friends is doing it! They are behaving like stupids who follow the foolish apes in other words! Well I would advise them to just insert their photos below and take this award! No offense taken. Come one students… stop this now.
And finally answering to point 1: Transport problem! I can agree with this one. But as I said earlier, there are many of those students who roam around after school! So this is not an excuse for them. But for those students who really have this problem, I think that this is a problem that can be easily solved by the Ministry of Education and Transport! I still wonder why the government did not think about this. Nowadays there are many yellow painted CNT buses which are used to transport students. The solution is simple. Instead of sending all the buses to students and penalizing the public passengers, its better the government convert those old buses of CNT to school buses and allocate about 10 to 15 buses per school. And to replace those school buses, simply the CNT has to buy new buses for the public passengers. I dont think money is a real problem in this country! But as usual the concerned authorities keep doing like ******!
The best would have been that the ministry of education itself had its own school buses specially dedicated to students. Its true that transport is a real problem and its also doing really hot these days in Mauritius. One other problem is i still wonder why those blue lines bus are not free for students while Rose Hill Transport ones are free!
Advise to students: Stop behaving like masters of stupids and stop those idiots strike for the additional 30 minutes! If you wanna do a strike, do it so that the government give you good transport facilities! I also heard a student saying that they will perfectly agree if school starts at 9:00 if it is to end at 15:00 – I think this is a good idea for the lazy! I think waking up early is a problem for many students, so a 9:00 to 15:30 will be okay too! If those same students did not had any tuitions, they would still have lot a free time after school!

I also agree on the case of private tuitions and the way teachers work in class. There’s another angle of view though.
Let’s take the case of a parent paying private tuitions for his kid with a well-known teacher in any subject. That kid gets so proud of taking tuition with the guy that he goes to school and disobeys his teacher in that same subject saying that he has tuition with a guy better than him. This discourages the teacher also.
So you might also put students “gran lagueule” in the equation. These are the same who’ll come round and insult people in the comments on this blog and who have started elsewhere.
I think that it is too late to sanitize the education system at this level.

@Psychopunk: Yea its opening the eyes of students with brain cells while closing and faking the sight of your’s which is already illusioned by those teachers who are sponsoring those fraking strikes! Who lose? Teachers? No they get paid Rs18000++ even if they sit at home! The government? No.. its just another issue that they wont even bother much. Students? Yea you are loosing! If you people had instead fighted for the transport facility…it would have been good…, if you people would have fighted for teachers to work better at school…it would have been better! And concerning the article I wrote, I nearly got death threats from some motherfucker JKC students. Yes, they have been fucking their own mothers and sisters. And now they want to mess around with me. Important notice to them: Try to mess around with me and I will ruin you and your family.
Coming to the topic, I discussed it with many UOM friends and they found that college students are rubbishly stupid. I just invented a new word. Rubbishly.
At Uni, you will have courses from 08.30 to as late as 18.00. On Mondays I start at 08.30 and I ends around 16.30. On tuesdays, I start at 08.30 and ends around 17.00. I have friends starting at 08.00 and ending at 17.00 on Saturdays. But you won’t find us bitching around and burning the campus for having such lectures time. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, I have no breaks for my courses. 5 hours non stop. 1 lecture gets over, run to the other one before you’re late. And those fucking idiots are whining because of just college ending my 15.00. Grow up immature kids. And yes avish, you will always find students from a particuler college behaving like complete shits. Like painting other college’s walls, swearing, flaming with the “mo meme mari” mentality and so on. I guess that I don’t have to say the college’s name.

I am a student of Bell Village SSS. The work of a teacher is a lot harder than u can think silly as*h*le u just sit in the office with AC on and work on papers
The problem with these 30mins is that there some ACTIVITY PERIOD, which wont help us that much. 30mins in tuitions would be better than doing nothing in school

i can afford those private tuitions, and they help me a lot, i can practice more

The real question we should be asking is what could be done instead of a virtual activity period. Instead of 30 minutes per day, some of the classes could be shifted to the first three days of the week. Thus freeing an additional 90 minutes where real activities could be organised or thursdays of fridays for the different classes. Its not conceivable to have a whole school of 900 pupils partiipating in any sort of activity simultaneously.
Kurt, your fowl language is a clear indication of the type of education you had. You could have used an activity period where you learn to be convincing without using such language.
Its very easy for pupils to ‘FORCE’ lazy n lousy teachers to prepare their lessons, deliver them promptly, and solve any problems or misconceptions that arise in a 1 h 20 min session. It requires a change of attitude from both parties. The quality of education has got to be improved, increasing quantity does not solve our problem.
Student should be fighting for thier rights for GOOD quality FREE education instead of shorter school hours. Get the minister to do somethings about the way the monitoring of teachers is being done.
Continue to victimise teachers like it’s hapening here and elsewhere will only lead to lousier mother fuckers apply for the job. The ones who would have had the qualities required to be good teachers go for other more rewarding professions; those where they earn more money and RESPECT.

In that case, my answer for you is if you would have worked as you should be doing in school, then private tuition is not necessary. If you do not take private tuition, then from 8.30 till 15.00 is not a big deal.. Take that..
@OuZ KeDz – “The work of a teacher is a lot harder than u can think” – Agree, because they face a lot of spoiled student who dont even respect them. One thing, the aim of this activity, as I understand, is to promote extra-curriculum activities (for eg, as avish mentioned, talk on sex edication) and you should use that time to shape your personality. Just reading books and be result-oriented is not everything is life..
@Kurt – There are various ways to say the same thing. That guy meant for you to be a bit more polite…. And ya, i think you missed one point.. I must say SOME parents are also to be blamed. They are like desperate people, despite not knowing how the teacher is performing at school, are keen to enrol their child for private tuition just because other are taking private tuition.

@RDN: I can understand this as even as i was a student. However read the post well you will see that I proposed the solutions. The 30 minutes additional shall not be used to make students more mentally tired but more as an entertainment additional time. Infact I would have said..why not allocate the whole hour from 14:00 to 15:00 doing the entertaining things mentioned in the post!
If a student like to read he goes to the library…if he like the web..he use the internet…if possible it would have been good to also install lan gamings for this special hour…. I wont say sports as you all already have the P.E module… i mean… period.
Conecrnig you get tired…thats the discussion of this article but some of you have been going out of the main subject! – The part oof the concerned topic is why dont u all stop these private tuitions?? The teacher at school dnt work you will say? Well instead of fighting for this additional time…why dont you students fight so that TEACHERS work the same way as they work in tuition???
In UK…those guys learn at school..and you know why they are relaxed? because they dnt need to go to tuitions after school! There is no slavery! They enjoy after school! Above I mentioned about some college students roaming around at KFC! Yea but I have nothing against roaming around.. roaming around in DECENT places is ok. But when students roam around and THEN PRETEND TO REACH TUITION LATE because of an additional 30 minutes…that s*cks!!
The college system really damn! That is why when many of you reach the university you feel lost! The lecturers at the university jst come and read and go! Whether u understand or not! Upto you to go and learn. And we do it! There are no tuitions for the university! So why this stupid culture of private tuitions? If you didnt had private tuitions…you would not need to be scared of an additional 30 minutes…

Ya i agree about your views – but bear in mind we’re in MRU even if WE want things to move – it won’t! of course everybody would love to have a college life as in other countries – they start at 9hr and sometimes finish at 16hr30, they have a longer recess, etc. No need for tuitions even for the worst students. its great. @Ema: we are in mauritius, the education system also really sucks. This I wont denied. But those students instead of striking to make it better, they are striking for useless reasons. The main cause of all this are those butternuts assholes teachers who do not work at school and force the generation to depend on tuitions. the problem is not that school finishes at 3p.m nor that we’ll be late at private tuition.. It’s only that state secondary school have an activity period and i don’t think that this period is really needed..
And after all we’re still students and we need to have some break and if we want to take tuition that’s our problem.. Did you know that practically all Laureats took private tuition?

@Antish: I think the summer is really a waste. The gov should really remove that thing.
Concerning the different end times of colleges, what you proposed is a good idea. But I am sure that many will not like it as some will say 7:45 is too early lol. Best two solution I fink is to start at 8 and end at 15. concerning transport as I proposed I think allocation about 15 buses perschool would be fine. Its on the side of the government to stop bein mean in this case. I proposed above to allocate more buses and also to not affect the public transport service its best to get some more vehicule in here. Some of those cnt buses look like sh*ts.
Now if students agree on what u jst proposed, then this will be the best idea ever. I think its a good one. Some start earlier and end earlier. No clash at the bus terminals.

The only reason I’ll quote to answer those students who say that tuition supposedly “helps” them a lot is because they don’t value the work being done in class. I ask those student here, how many actually give a serious thought to the fact that can a tuition (arguably 2hr) replace what is being done in school(around 6 hours)?? If only you guys start valorising and pressurize those teachers (only those lazy teachers because other teachers do their work as they should be doing), do those extra exercise (that you do in tuition) and ask the school teacher to solve problems that you encounter.. But No… For all of you here, tuition is a MUST. Then, of course, you will always neglect school work and valorise tuition because you pay for that whereas education is free in Mauritius. By saying that, I hope you realise what I am trying to say – Expensive is not necessarily good.
Avish, do you still remember how many students in RCPL play truant during school hours. This is an established mindset – “Tuition is a MUST and school is bullshit” and it’s very very difficult to change someone perception.
@Loic – The whole purpose of this blog is not to make some proud or arrogant or whatsoever but instead serve as a platform to discuss ideas. If you misunderstand its fitness for purpose, then it’s your problem.

Considering the case of RCPL… we were both there and we know how it is. At rcpl itself you have two types of students, one who will really learn no matter where he take tuition or does not take tuition and the other type is the die-hard-ego-type who will take a dozen of tuitions with the most renowned teacher JUST TO SHOW OFF to other people but finally get laid lol.
I think the best way to break this evil culture is to ammend the law so that teachers do not have the right to give private tuitions! Or if they do give it, then they should pay tax for it as if i am not wrong they do not include this income in the income tax?

The thing that school finish earlier is not a problem, the problem is that Activity Period. I have only 2 more years to study before university, i must work hard to be able to complete that fucking syllabus.
@Ashish : Yeah, you right, but this is important only for those little kids, like 12 – 15 yrs. as the last 3 years left we need to study really hard and i think that from 16 years everyone know those things(teachers talk in activity period)
@Yudz : i think that i’ve already gve u your answer. Like u said, those extra 30mins, can meet friedns, etc.. Its not like you think, everyone stay in his class and teachers will talk on things that we already know, these 30minutes could be use more efficiently, i will learn more useful things spending 30mins in tuition which will help me for my exams

All the activities that you are suggesting are really good – Wikipedia, library session, sex education… BUT by the time they are implemented, I would be out of school. Everything should have been planned beforehand before implementing the extension of school hours. Some days back, my friends and I wanted to play badminton in the hall and we were not allowed. What is the use then of such an activity period?
Another major problem as you mentioned, is that of transport. Did you say it is easy to solve this problem? Since the start of last year, my school has been sending regularly requests for a Mahebourg school bus to the Ministry of Education and the NTA. We even have the required number of students traveling in that route (60)… We are still waiting though, for a bus to be allocated to us. Is it a lack of resources or a lack of willingness on the part of authorities, that I don’t know.

@ Avish–> Concerning the tax for tuition. This already exists. Teachers pay tax for the tuition they gave.
Abolition of tuition, to amend the law will be easy. But talking and implementing it are two world of difference.

it’s not that we don’t want to work in class it’s only the fact that some teachers just don’t care about students anymore..they are getting their money at the end of the month so why will they bother..
And then you said that the government is trying to abolish tuition..BUT.. that’s Mauritius.. students will still go and take tuition..That’s why people in general in Mauritius are way more intelligent than people in other countries..

All talk no action…whichever side it is…30 mins..is that woth fighting for so hard? Democracy…that word has no meaning in this country i c…respect each others opinion…one finds the utility of the extra half hour…chapeau bas..sex education, general discussions to improve general knowledge…the endeavour would be certainly worth… especially in mauritius…on the other hand, i dunno, ppl want to take tuition, they’re free to do so…that’s what democracy is all about, huh? they wanna spend to learn what they just learnt at school again?fine… mind u, i’m not criticising, i’ve done so during my school days myself…n had good teachers at school…in my time there were very good teachers @ RCPL n i still went for tuition…that was part of the mauritian culture and still is…can we change that now?dunno…maybe those extra 30 mins will change the mentality…maybe the chaos will continue till they revert to the old 14 30 time… Thing is…fighting is foolish…debating is much more intelligent…

dont generalise about teachers being lazy. Maybe it’s the case in some colleges only.
U compared the situation of a teacher to that of someone who works in the office. but it’s not all comparable. see other working people, even urself wen ulll start working, whem they finish at 4 or 5, they dont have anything to do at home. their work is in the office.
but a teacher??? even one who doesnt give tuitions!! work finishes at 2 30 but when he’ll get home, he’ll have to prepare notes for the next day classes n very often he’ll work till 9/10. n u think tests n other homework r corrected automaticallY???
I agree with some of the issues you have raised here but dont view it only from one angle.

@iman: Again i DIDNT generalise buddy. Read the whole post again and also the one concluding this issue, you will see I mentioned about THOSE who are lazy.. and didnt said ALL are. Thanks for commenting. Concerning the office workers, even when they get home at 4 or 5 they have work buddy. Many of these people take some work home to complete. And also maintaning the house, take care of kids after work…etc are also called work or mostly responsibilities.

Live life as it is and face the facts guys.
We’re getting more than some countries where education can’t be afforded by a family.
Here we get everything free and we still complain. Education + transport.
When i was in college i did take 2 or 3 tuition and i know what it means to wait until one tuition starts/ends. But did i even complain?
Starting from 8am to 3pm is not a great deal guys. Take it easy and you will get used to the new system. Concerning your tuition time, everything will be adjusted and there will be one way surely for this problem.
Also, i can see everybody acting as hero here. Why are you guys fighting each other?
All fingers are not the same in a hand..think twice before judging something!
