The HSC 2008 results are out and now the battle of life will begin for many of those concerned ex-students while others will keep on moving along the road of education. So why not have a little not so official guide for those who will want to come to the University of Mauritius (UOM).

We all go through these steps of life. The first milestone is the CPE exams at primary level. Then we were to deal with small time exams until we faced the SC exams (also known as GCE O-Level). Then came the HSC giant lol. And what now? Many students have got their HSC result slips and a major decision is now to be taken.
Before I continue, I would like to congratulate all those who passed their HSC exams. They HSC 2008 exam results were announced day before yesterday in Mauritius and now students have 5 main options:
1. Reseat for the HSC examination if they are not satisfy with their results
2. Start looking for jobs and start to earn a living
3. Get a part time job and save money for future studies
4. Go abroad for further studies at foreign universities
5. Apply for Mauritian Universities
This article is about the 5th option. A guide at the base of the real ladder of life for the University of Mauritius.
Well if you will choose to study further in Mauritius, then the options available are:
1. UOM – University of Mauritius
2. UTM – University of Technology of Mauritius
3. DCDM
4. SSR Medical College
5. The MGI – For arts, language, music, fine arts and Mauritian studies.
6. Some other approved degree colleges
Now I won’t talk on the other’s as I am a UOM student and as such I know the University of Mauritius more and will be more able to advise HSC leavers on this one.
So welcome to the not-so ultimate guide to go to the University of Mauritius!
The university of Mauritius! Yea that where infact most students with fair to good and also very good results go after the HSC. It is to be noted that as per the regulation of UOM, students have to meet certain criteria to be eligible to have a seat at the University of Mauritius. Though it is not that hard, many students infact do not get approved every year. Well if you know “someone” at the administrative board then I guess you are in without any mess lol. **Kidding**
The Requirements for UOM
All applicants should be holder of an IT proficiency certificate or an alternative equivalent acceptable to the University of Mauritius. (IC3 etc)
This is a must now to be accepted at UOM. There are also many other requirements that depends mainly on the course that you are applying for. Have a look at these documents for more: Link 1 | Link 2
Your HSC grades and results will also determine whether you are accepted for a course requested. Now there are some students who only want a Diploma in a field and not the full degree. So here is the the requirement for the UOM Diploma.
Main Courses Available for a BSC
The most popular courses at UOM are those in the Engineering section which is always full! Most popular courses are Computer Science and Engineering, Information Systems, Mechatronic, Management and Law, Electrical Engineering. However there are much more courses available at UOM. Here is the whole list from the website of the university itself.
Read and choose well! Courses vary from 3 years to 4 years. Some courses like Computer Science and engineering are available only as full time while other courses such as Bachelor of Pharmacy is available both as full time and part time.
The Advantage and Disadvantage of UOM
The main advantage of UOM for your BSc degree is the low fees compared to other universities in Mauritius. Why? Simply because part of the fees are paid by the government grant at UOM. A typical course per year can be less than Rs 15000 and some even less if it does not have any laboratory fees. More about the fees here.
Another advantage is that the degrees from UOM have priority in Mauritius while looking for a job. Well… assuming you passed and get a good degree ofcourse.
The disadvantages? Well do not expect much of the computer labs at UOM! You will keep expecting. Else everything is fair. The course level is high but do not expect on lecturers and lecture notes only. A university course is meant for students to learn by himself too from many external sources.
Things You Should Know About UOM
Eating Places
If you wanna eat something good and which is value for money, then go to the MIE cafetaria. The price and food is fair there. “Un plat mine frit poulet Rs 28″ or you can even get a coffee at Rs 5 without forgeting “un plat briyani poulet” at Rs 50 where two people can eat that lol.
Place to avoid to eat? The UOM Cafetaria itself is a place to avoid unless you do not bother to eat scrap and which is very expensive! The MES Cafetaria is an alternative if the MIE one mentioned above is crowded.
Well how can I forget the little shop of JAMES on the other side of the university campus. If you need “pistass sale, baget fromage” or even “dholl puri” thats the place to hang out.
Photocopy
There are 4 places for photocopy services. One is at UOM itself just above the UOM cafetaria. You can also do photocopies at the UOM General Library. The third place is at the Post Office nearby the shop of James and finally the fourth one is near the UOM Bus Stop. Best Place?? The Library and UOM photocopy are the best concerning value for money.
Print from pendrives? The above mentioned places except the Library do printing services too. Best place is of course UOM above the cafeteria. If it is crowded go to the Post Office. By the way be warn… a colour print is at Rs25 per page! So in the long run it is better to have a home printer.
Lovers Point
Uhh… no n sorry I wont talk on this one else the UOM security guards will run after me for promoting dating and romance or even sex on the UOM campus lol. Well… when you reach the University of Mauritius, you will automatically know of those places. No worry!!
Computer Lab
The best one available is the new CISCO computer lab. However do not expect too much as most of the time there are classes going on in this one. You can also use the CITS labs but be sure to have a recent antivirus software and also do bring mouse with you as most of the PC’s mouse are don’t know where.
The MCID lab is ok and fair to use however. Concerning Lab 1.8, you can at times expect a good connection but most of the time its “Page Cannot be Displayed”!
If you have a laptop, then there is wifi connection available in the Raiz region. Well you can enjoy that. As for the other labs in phase 2 of the engineering section they are mostly reserved for final year students… and yea we do have nice PCs there lol.
Anything more??? Let me know in comment section and I will update this part of the article.
Myth of UOM
It is said that an foreign university degree is more valuable than an UOM BSc degree. Well know that this is totally FAKE!! In fact go and ask any human resource manager of any company in Mauritius, the truth is that an UOM degree have a fair priority over a foreign degree. Well this applies for field of studies that are available in Mauritius and foreign countries as well.
Case example:
Guy A has a First Class BSc degree in Computer Science and Guy B has the same first class degree from a UK university. Result: Guy A is given the job!
Uhh.. please do not consider extreme cases such as Harvard university degrees in this example please as in 10000, maybe only one can reach Harvard or similar universities.
Well there are many things to write about UOM and a blog post is too short for this. Anyone having a specific question, leave it in the comment section below. I will try to update the post with the answers as the days goes by. UOM will soon start accepting applications from students. So keep in touch for more details on the when and the where.
