Welcome to the Great Bloggers Interview of Mauritius 2009. I warn you all this special post is VERY long. So get a cup of coffee and some snack while you read. For those who have diabetes don’t add too much of sugar in the cup and for those who have heart complications do not eat too much of greasy snacks! So here we go!

The Welcome Speech

Welcome to Island Crisis Humans! Before I start presenting the participants I would like to comment on a few stuffs. There was initially 38 blogs listed here and eventually while other participants added new blogs in their interview answers I added them to the list too. There must be a lot of other Mauritian blogs too but I am maybe not aware of them. The list used was those who have atleast updated with one article in the past two months and who I am aware of or that other bloggers mentioned about. So finally we reached at a list of  43 Mauritius active blogs. Out of these 28 bloggers responded to the event which is about 63%. Where are the others… I dont know.

One question someone asked was why this event? This great bloggers interview at one go and at one place is to unite all the active Mauritian Bloggers in one place and an attemp to mark their presence and share their views in one place. Also these interviews will cross promote new and elder bloggers while at the same time let each other know what each one likes and opinions. So buddies…..To start this wonderful ceremony, I will first present to you the Two Guest Bloggers of this Great Bloggers Interview of Mauritius. Our two guest international bloggers who are invited for this special event in Mauritius are Tori Thompson from the USA and Ajith Prasad Edassery from India.

Then there will be the presentation of our very dear Mauritian Bloggers who are the main heroes (and heroins) of this blogshow and finally there will be the analysis of the results of these interview. LETS START!

Our Dear Guest Bloggers

Tori – Among the best MMO bloggers and among my first blogger friend. I call her the Scammer Buster. Scammers are afraid of her and Tori is and ever growing example that people can earn online without spending a cent! Her blog paidopps is an example.

1. Tori why do you blog and what is a blog for you in some words?

Prior to blogging I was working as a model and as well as bartending.  I then became pregnant with my first son and was told that I wouldn’t be able to resume modeling until I “looked good again” (Gee, thanks).  I had to stop bartending to avoid second hand smoke as well as for safety reasons – being pregnant and wearing stiletto heels is never a good combination.

At that time I found myself unemployed and pretty bored. I turned to the internet to attempt to discover ways to make money online.  Back then I was unable to find any websites that contained a wealth of knowlege on how to make legitimate money. Every website I came across wanted me to invest in an e-book or purchase a membership to something.

I then decided that I would start website and basically record all of my money making adventures.  I wanted to share real ways that people could make legitimate money without having to spend a single penny.

As time progressed my blog (PaidOpps.BlogSpot.com) began getting a lot of traffic and feedback.  I realized that there were so many other people – just like myself – looking for real ways to supplement their income.

I turned my blog into a quest – with a goal of becoming the number one source for real ways to make cash and also the best place to find out the truth about scam programs that are so heavily promoted by money-hungry affiliates.
To me, a blog is not only a database of knowlege, but also a documentary of the authors life and experiences.

2. What are your favourite topics of discussion on blog. Please specify your 5 most favoutite (Eg Politics, Dating, Tech etc)

My favorite topics are (random order)
1 – Saving money.  I absolutely love posting anything that has to do with saving cash!

2 – Busting scams.  Blowing the lid off shady websites is probably my favorite thing to research and post about because the articles get alot of reaction – both good and bad.  Either way, it’s a true passion of mine to expose lies and save people from spending their hard earned cash on outright scams!

3 – Ways to earn money online.  Of course this is one of my favorites!  I have written over 1,000 articles and counting!

4 – Personal stories.  Every now and again I try to include some photos or silly stories of things that happen in my life. I think it’s a great way to connect with readers.  I like letting people know that behind the website there’s a real person!

3. Do you earn with your blog and if so which earning source do you use? (eg Adsense etc) If no, then do you intend to monetise your blog soon?

Of course I earn money with my blog!  That’s what has kept me motivated for the past three years!
I make sure I don’t count solely on one program to monetize my blog. I work with hundreds of different programs, including Adsense (especially “Adsense for Search”!).  I post articles about all the different programs I use to earn money and how they work – so you’ll have to read my blog for more info on that!

4. What is your opinion on online earning through a blog? I mean do you think its bad or totally normal? (If you say bad please specify a reason)

I think online earning through a blog is absolutely FANTASTIC!  If people can make an *honest* living, that is.  I am against people who create artificial blogs and offer inaccurate information in efforts to make money off of affiliate programs.

5. Do you write for a specific niche, or country or you write for a wide range of people from anywhere?

My blog, PaidOpps focuses strictly on making money online with no investment.  I write for people world wide and I try to include as many programs as possible that are available to those who reside outside of the United States.

6. Which blog script do you use and what are the things you would like to be added to its functionality? (eg automatic photo resize etc)

I use (the free!) Blogger.com which is html. My blog was created before Blogger.com upgraded it site so I am still working with the old do-it-yourself html page, but I love it!  I have learned so much by having to teach myself everything!

7. The last question of my very boring interview lol. Tell us about 2 blogs that you cannot miss to read every day and why you like them so much. Thats all

I love to check out ShoeMoney.com.  Although I can’t keep up with all the posts on it, I think it’s a wonderful website and I have a secret crush on Jeremy Schoemaker.

But my biggest addiction is UFC.com. I love reading their blogs.  I’m having a blast following Dana White on Twitter!

My Second Guest Blogger for this grand event is Ajith! Ajith – A wonderful and among the best SEO optimiser blog! His articles on the Dollar Shower are a must to read. He is also a great fan of Cricket!

1. Ajith why do you blog and what is a blog for you in some words?

Let me answer the second part first. For me, a blog is all about ?self-expression? or in other words writing about those things that you are passionate about and always wanted to talk about. In my case, my cricket blog is what I consider as my voice because I am passionate about the game of cricket. There may not be much comments there but I still keep writing.

Why do I blog? Well, I do it mainly for the reasons mentioned above. The second aspect is to boost my ego. However, DollarShower was started with the intention of making some money in the long run, as well.

2. What are your favourite topics of discussion on blog. Please specify your 5 most favoutite (Eg Politics, Dating, Tech etc)

Cricket, Politics, Technology, Stock Markets, Food

3. Do you earn with your blog and if so which earning source do you use? (eg Adsense etc) If no, then do you intend to monetise your blog soon?

I do earn from DollarShower though it?s still not any significant income compared to my regular job. My main sources of online income are PPC ads (Google AdSense), Private ad sales and referral income. Very rarely I post paid reviews as well though I have stopped for the time being.

4. What is your opinion on online earning through a blog? I mean do you think its bad or totally normal? (If you say bad please specify a reason)

It is not at all bad to earn money online through your blog because it gives you some returns for part of the effort you spend online. If complimented well with good content, nobody would even complain about those ads that you have on your blog. However, I hate when I see that someone owns ten of fifteen made-for-AdSense blogs with very little content on them.

(I should warn those who are after making money online that there?s no concept of sustainable online income. Hence one can do it more as a supplementary activity and not as your main business)

5. Do you write for a specific niche, or country or you write for a wide range of people from anywhere?

I write for a wider audience from around the globe. Of course, I had a chance to write more about my country and topics related to the same. In fact, I would do it some time soon. For monetizing purposes, though, it is always better to go global. As for the niche, I try my best to stick to the topic categories of my respective blogs. DollarShower.com is about blogging tips, Search Engine Optimization, make money online topics where as Pavilion End Se is dedicated to cricket alone.

6. Which blog script do you use and what are the things you would like to be added to its functionality? (eg automatic photo resize etc)

None. I use only those basic functionalities provided by the blog platforms (Blogger and WordPress) but extended by bare minimum number of plugins.

Hey, you know what? Even if I don?t read any of those 70 blogs for the next one year, I will be still alive.

To be frank, what I like to read the most is one of those social-political-satirical blog, ghost written for Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, known as the Warren Buffet of India. In my niche, I read http://problogger.net regularly though of late, I feel that, I am not really excited by it anymore.

Why do you blog and what is a blog for you? VIEW BLOG HERE!	I initially blogged to keep in touch with physics by forcing myself to post something regularly. In the end, it became a platform to express my opinions and ideas, share them with the world and hopefully, get some feedback.

Why do you blog and what is a blog for you? VIEW BLOG HERE!	I started blogging after I made a few comments on Yashvin’s blog. Actually I love writing and later I thought it would be great to simply blog.I believe that blogging is more than just words on the net. It’s an interaction between people. i think of it as a mean to share what I wish to share and ask for opinions etc…(though I believe my blog gets the least response! lol!) (eg automatic photo resize etc)	what is a blog script? it doesn’t even exist. is blog a new language? As far as functionality goes, i prefer things which won’t clutter the screen. I used JQuery for slides, a rating star plugin thingy, and a poll. Oh, wp wall is nice too – to leave spam msg. What else?

Why do you blog and what is a blog for you? VIEW BLOG HERE!	I blog to express my point of view on what I see in my daily life. My blog is my personal space on the web where anyone in the world can access and give their opinions. It’s a bit like articles in the newspaper
What are your favourite topics of discussion on blog. Please specify your 5 most favoutite (Eg Politics, Dating, Tech etc)	Sports, Personal experience, Technology(Hardware and Software), General Knowledge and reality
Do you earn with your blog and if so which earning source do you use? (eg Adsense etc) If no, then do you intend to monetise your blog soon?	No, no way to monetize my blog. It’s my hobby and not a business. Money will come in other ways.
What is your opinion on online earning through a blog? I mean do you think its bad or totally normal? (If you say bad please specify a reason)	Bad. Well it will be for the sake of money only. Greediness will come between the blogger and its content. The content will be of course artificial.

Why do you blog and what is a blog for you? VIEW BLOG HERE!	A blog is a means of expressing yourself, a medium of one-to-many communication. I blog because blogging is a passion for me, for the above reason & it’s a great pastime.
What are your favourite topics of discussion on blog. Please specify your 5 most favoutite (Eg Politics, Dating, Tech etc)	Tech, Mauritius, cars, web 2.0 & off-beat stuff. (& Orange)
Do you earn with your blog and if so which earning source do you use? (eg Adsense etc) If no, then do you intend to monetise your blog soon?	I used to have a decent earnings on my blog, but ever since I’m using my new template, earnings are nil. I’m still experimenting for the highest earning ad type/placement. I prefer AdSense.
What is your opinion on online earning through a blog? I mean do you think its bad or totally normal? (If you say bad please specify a reason)	There’s nothing wrong is monetizing your blog. It’s a multi-billion industry, where many bloggers have managed to make their blogs their livelihood.
Do you write for a specific niche, or country or you write for a wide range of people from anywhere?	My content is mainly oriented towards a Mauritian audience, but most of my traffic is international.
Which blog script do you use and what are the things you would like to be added to its functionality? (eg automatic photo resize etc)	Mostly tracking scripts. But I would suggest taking a look at JQuery & MooTools.

Why do you blog and what is a blog for you? VIEW BLOG HERE!	I blog is my “home” on the web, the place where I can say anything I want!! I started to blog by curiosity when I was younger 2-3 years ago but stopped shortly after. I started again in November last year as I felt I really had to show my opinions and creations

What is your opinion on online earning through a blog? I mean do you think its bad or totally normal? (If you say bad please specify a reason)	I’m neutral about this cause I think it’s the sole source of revenue for the blog writers but some blogs have an overkill on advertising.
Do you write for a specific niche, or country or you write for a wide range of people from anywhere?	I prefer to write in a language understood by the majority of readers, I always try to write in the best english possible and I rarely use creole words (when I do, I provide a translation). I do this cause I have many friends on the web who don’t know a word of creole. Also, I’m much better at communicating in English than other languages.

Your 5 favourite Mauritian Blogs and why?	1. Tushal -Crazy guy who thinks he’s the devil and does as he pleases. Also known as Tushux 2. Yashvin -The most personal of the bloggers. He writes about things he does everyday and is very good at doing that. One among those who inspired me to start a blog. 3. Chaya Known as the “hot python girl”(I’m still trying to know how she got that name!). Usually hangs with Tushal. 4. carrotmadman6 Mauritian madman (no pun intended) addicted to technology and cars. Very handy indeed. I write my posts offline, and publish it whenever i want. I have options to put watermarks(& other effects). Quickly and neatly without having to wait for the page to reload or the picture to upload.

Why do you blog and what is a blog for you? VIEW BLOG HERE!	I blog to share Free football(English Premier League) streams to mauritians. Many do not have the means to pay for Premium channels, and MBC barely show favorite matches. Being a cyber island, most of us have a decent internet connection, and thus i bring free live football to you! A blog is a place to share information and discuss about it. Its like a mini-newspaper – without the newspaper’s bullshits.

The visitors do not really pay or lose anything. Its like a way of saying thanks for the content they visited by clicking on the ads. But to be honest, these advertising do not really generate a decent earning – unless i think you have a really very popular site.

Emphasis is on Live streams but occasionally there are news and reviews. I started by targeting Mauritius, but the world was quick to find it. Most people come from Europe.

I was using Adsense when I started the blog but soon removed all ads as they were displaying links I did not want to show on my blog. You bought it (a space on the server reserved for you) and you have to pay for it. If this is the case, I do think that is quite normal..(No?)

Do you earn with your blog and if so which earning source do you use? (eg Adsense etc) If no, then do you intend to monetise your blog soon?	Not a single penny. I will never monetize my blog. Ads often look cheap and unprofessional and sometimes they distract readers.
What is your opinion on online earning through a blog? I mean do you think its bad or totally normal? (If you say bad please specify a reason)	I don’t think its a bad thing if you are having a good revenue but ads make your blog looks ugly.
Do you write for a specific niche, or country or you write for a wide range of people from anywhere?	For anyone, anywhere around the world with Mauritius as main target.
Which blog script do you use and what are the things you would like to be added to its functionality? (eg automatic photo resize etc)	No special script for the time being. I would like a “Wall” script as on Facebook with all the features like update status of other blogs, post a link, add photos, hug friends, among others. : D

Why do you blog and what is a blog for you? VIEW BLOG HERE!	Blogging has become a habit for me. I was a member of Mauritius Interactive (also called MI, mostly known to the Sino-Mauritian community) since 2001 and I’ve been blogging there until I finally got my first personal domain in early 2004. Writing is a way for me to express myself, to get things off my chest as well as to record some events which happened in my life. My blog is the place where I can do all that and also where I can share them all with my family,friends and anyone who want to read my blog entries. My blog readers can tell me their opinions on the topic that I’ve written about and I can interact with them via the comments section of my blog. Blogging is a great way to make new friends.

Do you earn with your blog and if so which earning source do you use? (eg Adsense etc) If no, then do you intend to monetise your blog soon?	No, I don’t earn money with my blog…yet. =) I intend to monetize my blog soon but mostly out of curiosity.
What is your opinion on online earning through a blog? I mean do you think its bad or totally normal? (If you say bad please specify a reason)	I don’t have anything against online earning through blogs. It’s quite common nowadays, especially for people who have bought domain names and web hosting packages. However, I don’t like it when there are too many ads on a blog or if the ads are too big. That’s a big turnoff. I also don’t like frequent sponsored reviews. Some people tend to overdo it when trying to earn money through their blogs.
Do you write for a specific niche, or country or you write for a wide range of people from anywhere?	A wide range of people from anywhere. I used to write for my family and friends. Over the years, I got more and more blog readers from other countries and now most of my blog readers are non-Mauritians. It’s not something that I wanted in the beginning but it just happened.
Which blog script do you use and what are the things you would like to be added to its functionality? (eg automatic photo resize etc)	I started out with b2(cafelog) but then switched to WordPress (successor of b2) since early 2004. I’ve been using WordPress ever since. Having seen different versions of WordPress over the years, I have to say that I’m very satisfied with the current WordPress. People all over the world are contributing towards its development and creating amazing WordPress plugins & themes. Whatever functions that haven’t been included in the core code can be easily be added thanks to all the WordPress plugins available and people can just install what they need.
Your 5 favourite Mauritian Blogs and why?	I only have 4 favourites in this list. My list below is NOT arranged in order of preference. 1. waz Funny guy. His blog entries are a bit on the ‘short’ side but I love seeing the comics that he makes out of photos. 2. Morinn Morinn blogs about her personal life as well as her opinions on what goes on in Mauritius. I like her writing style. 3. Shah Shah blogs about different topics but what makes me read his blog is the fact that he is a funny guy whose comments are enjoyable to read. 4. Yashvin A Mauritian blogger I’ve noticed since late 2006. I like reading his blog to know what’s going on in Mauritius. Recently updated Mauritian blogs which are not listed here but which I enjoy to read are: Eddy’s, Patrick’s & Raymond’s blogs. (I’m not writing their blog urls here because I’m not sure if they’ll agree to it.)

Your 5 favourite Mauritian Blogs and why?	Priscus, Chaya, Reddy, Shah, yashvin. Well I see them very active and keep themselves busy giving good info to the bloggers and they also make beautiful comments on topics of actuality, needs of the community and improvement in life of guys lol.

Do you earn with your blog and if so which earning source do you use? (eg Adsense etc) If no, then do you intend to monetise your blog soon?	I use Adsense, but it doesn’t work very well for me. I still have it, but stop considering the gains. I blog mainly for pleasure.
What is your opinion on online earning through a blog? I mean do you think its bad or totally normal? (If you say bad please specify a reason)	It’s normal I guess, but it kind of exploits people. What I don’t like people who blog ONLY for money. These, for me, are not true bloggers, and say what they say just for the bucks.

Which blog script do you use and what are the things you would like to be added to its functionality? (eg automatic photo resize etc)	I have an upload script that I customized a bit. It allows me to tag pictures and add a light-box-like functionality on the fly. Useful! Auto-resize and all is in.

WHY DO MAURITIUS BLOGGERS BLOG?

From the results it sure that the majority blog to share their views. Communication and Sharing of news and knowledge is also voted by many. About 15% of the Mauritian bloggers however blog only to save their life events like in a diary. Why I blog? Well simply because I love it. It is a way to share ideas.. Many of my post are for discussions while nowadays I also post news related post to share hot news and weird stuffs to my readers.

FAVOURITE TOPIC OF DISCUSSIONS OF MAURITIAN BLOGGERS

The chart shows the trends. No comments from me as this is actually what I expected. Infact we see that the trends is distributed among many types of blogging discussions. I personally prefer Dating tips, everyday events, news, blogging, politics…pff the list is long lol.

DO MAURITIAN BLOGGERS EARN ONLINE

Yes the fact is here! Mauritian bloggers earn money online. Infact the majority do earn some pocket money even if it is not much. And the survey also shows that there are bloggers who have plan to monetise their blog later. Personally I think online earning is NOTHING wrong! As long as you provide your readers ACTUAL CONTENT TO READ and also place your ads at the right place, there is nothing wrong. There are some cost when a blogger host his blog privately. For example he has to pay for the domain name and hosting and online earning with DECENT ads… (I think adsense is a decent company to work for and there is also Infolinks) is nothing wrong.

MAURITIAN BLOGGERS TARGETED AUDIENCE

As I expected the majority blog for a wide audience that is both local and intrenational. Well I do notice that there is a minimum of niche bloggers here in Mauritius. Niche blogging is nice as long as you like what you are blogging about. For example Yudz blog about football streaming which is his passion while Lovely Butterfly blog about food. (By the way her recipes are wonderful)
