Blog Trottoir Featuring Yashi

2009/06/10 - By Kurt Avish - 354 views

You’re at work? Throw the work away! You are at home and your mom is shouting a lot at you? Close the door and put a “Don’t Freaking Disturb Me” notice on your door because it is time for the 3rd episode of Blog Trottoir! Today we got a guy which most readers of IC already know and it’s Yashi!

Yashi is a Mauritian studying and working in the UK… although my strange indicator tells me he is somewhere in the ocean near the north-west of Africa! Yea at times I tend to can’t understand my blog data trackers. Anyway wherever he is, he is NOT in Amsterdam doing any naughty job. So lets get to his blog trottoir right now.

Kurt: Cigarretes are now illegal if not sold by pack of 20 in Mauritius. You got any problem with it or is it fine? And why?

matinee

Yashi: I have no problem at all, since I don’t smoke! And I think this regulation is a great thing. It was already illegal to sell single cigarettes although the law was being flouted almost everywhere. I once saw a documentary here about how tobacco companies were trapping young kids in Africa with their advertising and selling single cigarettes.

Youngsters who don’t work cannot always afford a whole pack of 20 so the tobacco companies would encourage shops to sell cigarettes in singles. Advertising has long been banned although loads of shops in Mauritius still sport the colours of Matinee and loads of shops still sell single cigarettes. Anyway, let’s hope everyone follows this new regulation, although I know there is no chance of that happening…

Kurt: Sometimes we see him performing mega-religious ceremonies on TV and then we hear he made the region around a temple in Mauritius ‘SECURE ZONE” because they disturb him while they pray. And what do you think?

Yashi: I am not entirely sure who you are talking about, but if I go by some of the L’express headlines, I assume you are talking about our PM. According to his statement to the newspaper, the temple had loudspeakers which were on till late hours. I don’t know how far it’s true.

But I am totally against any kind of loud sounds due to religious activities. I used to live near a Hindu temple and although it was only for a few nights a year, every time there was Navratree (a Hindu festival which goes on for 9 nights), the loudspeakers would be blaring till the early hours of morning.

Same for Maha Shivratree. And same for all other religious activities. Now, I have nothing against religion, but I don’t get it why religious songs or prayers should be broadcast so loudly, that too till late at night. It should be banned, if it isn’t already.

Kurt: You heard of Bermuda Triangle I guess. AF447 of Air France was recently pwnd by it some days ago. What are your explanation for the amazing Bermuda triangle?

bermuda triangle

Yashi: First of all, the plane didn’t crash anywhere near the notorious Bermuda Triangle. They have just discovered the tail of the plane 600 miles north east of the Brazilian islands of Fernando de Noronha, almost 3000 miles from Puerto Rico, the southernmost tip of the Bermuda Triangle.

Secondly, I don’t view the Bermuda Triangle the way other people do. I don’t think there is anything weird about it. Nothing has happened for decades, maybe because these days technology is much more advanced. We humans tend to use our imagination a lot when we can’t explain something. We had aliens, Atlantis, oceanic flatulence (which sounds disgusting),…etc to blame the Bermuda Triangle incidents on.

It’s good to speculate, but just because we can’t determine why something has happened, we can’t just blame it all on aliens! The last incident seriously linked to the Bermuda Triangle was in the 1970’s. Hopefully, we will never hear about anything again, although it is fun to indulge our imagination in what the Bermuda Triangle could be if it was genuine.

Kurt: There is a current rumor about a slight presence of cocain in Red Bull drinks! What is yoru opinion? Do you think this is just a way to attack the company’s sales or it can be true?

red bull

Yashi: Now I know why I used to be hooked on it during my university years!!! I could not revise at all without it!!!! On a more serious note, German authorities have banned Red Bull Cola (which I did not even know existed! I know the normal Red Bull only.) in several states after a lab found around 0.4 micrograms per litre concentration of cocaine in the drink.

The lab said that the quantity is too small to have any effect and is not technically what we popularly know as cocaine. But apparently, because it contains it, Red Bull Cola can’t be classed as a drink, but as a narcotic, which requires a special licence if it is to be sold.

Actually, instead of an attack on its sales, marketing experts are saying it might benefit Red Bull who could use the publicity and boost its sales. No publicity is bad publicity after all! Either way, I think the ban will be reversed soon. And Red Bull is a massive brand, its sales won’t be affected this easily. I mean, Coca Cola has known worst scandals and is still quite unbeatable in terms of worldwide presence.

Kurt: What do you think of ALL those so called religious GURUs of Mauritius… There are some for meditation..some for laughting…stuff..well! Are they getting too much attention for useless reasons?

hindu guru

Yashi: This is a thorny issue for me since I know a few people who follow these Gurus. I actually know only one such Guru, Swami Paramananda of SGAS. I don’t know if they get too much attention, I haven’t read about them in a while. I think most of them have genuine purposes, but I hated it when some of the people I knew tried to make me think like them and tried to tell me I was wrong about what I believe in or what I don’t believe in.

Some groups are in real danger of turning into sects even. SGAS have meditation classes which is a great way to relax (I have never heard of laughing lessons! Surely, you can just watch comedy movies for laughter, unless you don’t know how to laugh!!!).

But as long as no-one worships the Guru more than God or than their own parents, then it’s fine. Just like religion should never be an obsession or just blind faith. And also, Gurus driving Mercs is NOT very Guru-like…. or maybe that’s the whole point of being a Guru in the modern world.

Thank you Yashi for the answers. So buddies, I hope you enjoyed the Blog Trottoir. Any questions or any opinion? Share it in the comments and discuss. Else see you all for another episode soon. The Reaper of Blog Trottoir is fishing for today! Weirdly I thought he would have gone to the beach after his landing but decided to go fishing.

I read a few pages of Swami Paramananda’s book and i can say, they wana change the way we think. And that all our beliefs from childhood are not true and they cannot be involved in our daily life. Frankly I cannot follow those rules and regulations!!! as everyone has their own beliefs and clear mind.

Concerning this blog trottoir, i congratulate you for this as you have talked on big issues affecting Mauritius. Well done dude.. Keep posting interesting topics like this, they are really nice to read.

Well, Red Bull has been allowed in France since last year or 2007. Anyway, I’ve never seen the Red Bull Cola, and worse, I’ve never even ever tasted Red Bull even if all my friends do have them as they all work in bars, restaurants and night clubs. I don’t see why normal energy drinks should be banned?

Concerning religion. There’s one thing I’ve never understood. We’re in the 21st century and all the religions look like old school 18th century (at the most recent) things. If a religion is supposed to be a way to the “bien être”, why don’t they just put it in relation with our everyday life?

@Kurt Avish, well you might be a sort of Agnostic Theist but that also doesn’t apply because you do practice your religion.

Concerning the selling of cigarette in pack of 20 is really rubbish. This is not preventing smokers from smoking but encouraging them to smoke more. I have some friends. Earlier they were smoking like 5 to 10 cigarettes per day. Now with that rubbish legislation, they are smoking at least 20 cigarettes per day. I wonder if that law was to prevent them from smoking or forcing them to smoke more and hence spend more money on cigarettes.

The temple or whatever show which is going on. *cough*The PM does not live there..*cough*

    Yashi Reply:

@Tushal, if they smoke 10 a day, they could buy a 20 pack and smoke it over 2 days… I know the temptation is great to smoke the whole 20 pack if you have one, but then it’s more about the person not being able to control himself than the sale of 20 pack only.

I think this measure is more about discouraging people, mainly youngsters who smoke less than 10 a day. A 20 pack may not be affordable to college students (atleast I know I could not afford one when I was in college). Heavy smokers won’t be affected by any regulations as they need medical help rather than tougher regulation.

The best regulation would be to considerably increase tax on tobacco products but then British American Tobacco’s executives like De Gainsbourg and Du Plessis (Delacourt, De Betancourt, De Rien,….etc) could force the govt to change it back because high taxes will bring the business on its knees.

These days parents are giving Rs100 or more to the kids as pocket money. Not all parents but thoe who can gives money without much hesitation…. and believe me I see those college guys walking with their Benson or Dunhill pack of 20 everyday. Normally what many are doign now… one guy buy the pack and then they distribute is at school.

So eliminating the pack of 10 in todays situation is not really helping anything. I think if the government really wanna put a limit on it then cigarrete shld be allowed to be sold only in big supermarkets where it is easier to monitor if a student is buying. A kid will less likely do the effor to go and buy infront of so many people in the supermarket with his uniform.

It shld be denied in shops etc.

Joke: moi si mo vine minist mo fer van cigaret jst dan pharmacy lol. Cmsa seki bizin aste al pharmacy dir “donn moi 20 tube nicotine sil vou plait” rofl :P Ou gagn un ti recu tou… :P

@Tushal, when I was in college, not everyone could afford to buy a 20 pack. I assume these days kids are quite spoilt! Please tell me a pack of 20 is NOT less than Rs100. If it is, we have some big problems.

Concerning minors not buying cigarettes, I think we all know they do buy cigarettes. Most of them can’t go directly to 20 packs, but they can start with buying one cigarette, like in the old days and slowly move to 20 packs if they could afford it. Selling them in bigger packs discourages starters. But of course, it is not perfect.

I don’t know for the rest of you in here who are presenting your opinions, but I talk from my personal experience. I know Swami Paramananda, his works and I attend the meditation courses. Indeed, he is a well acclaimed author of many books and his undeniable contribution in the world of meditation and spirituality is very recognized. There are many people who benefit from it, in the form of the well-being and upliftment of the individual, the family as well as that of society. So it is normal that people who know the importance of meditation, will encourage others to follow the same path.

Coming to parents, it is true that our parents have given birth to us and an upbringing and they should be given their due respect, but if a proper analysis is made we see that they are human beings like everybody else – then where is the question of worshipping them? They are not even god-like nor enlightened people!!

We take pride in calling ourselves youngsters and talk about revolution – from what angle do we look young?? Where is the revolution? Is it about our way of thinking? We think the same as the previous generations! We are like “old wine in new bottle”!! And when there is talk of change, there is resistance in the garb of the continuation of tradition! Also, when others have the guts to change and bring forth a revolution, we find all sorts of faults in them!! Indeed, revolutionizing the way of living and bringing new ideas is a very courageous endeavour!! It is an avenue in which many people do not dare to venture because it requires much courage and that is why politicians, religious leaders and others have taken advantage of us and given the state of affairs, they will continue to take complete advantage of us!!!
