17 Swine Flu H1N1 Cases – Mauritius Unofficially in Crisis

August 8, 2009 / 10 Comments

As at today 8th August, we have 15 confirmed cases of H1N1 in Mauritius! The government is still convincing citizens that the situation is under control but knowing that the country is very small, 15 cases in just few days lead us to call the country in an unofficial crisis state!

h1n1, swine flu, h1z1

Right now, 7 Mauritians and 8 Foreigners are officially known to have caught the h1n1 virus. All of the 7 Mauritians are being treated at the Jawaharlall Nehru Hospital at Rose Belle right now while the foreigners who came from Reunion Island are isolated in a bungalow and are being treated by officials of the Ministry of Health.

The 8 foreigners are all students from Reunion Island who came to Mauritius for holidays. From what officials of the Ministry of Health said, most of the Mauritians infected caught the disease in Mauritius itself!

This is a really important point as it clearly shows that the swine flu virus is present locally! One of the Mauritians infected with h1n1 is currently in a very critical health state with life support. Her daughter who is 19 years old is also infected.

h1n1 mask, h1z1 mask

The Ministry of Health is asking everyone to stay calm as the situation is under control. I wonder under how much of a control knowing that the virus is present in the country itself now! People can get contaminated very easily andas such here are some precautionary advice:

  • Do not eat junk food at non hygienic places. (Bazaar, petty snack and even sanitary non compliant fast foods such as dholl puri!)
  • Try to avoid infected regions where people have already been contaminated.
  • Beware of even going to the public hospitals! People often cough like irresponsible ones there! If you go then do take care to protect your breath.
  • Wash your hands before eating anything!
  • Try to avoid over populated regions.  Probability of an infected person around is greater.
  • At the slight sign of flu contact a doctor! (Even pretend and exaggerate the issue as public hospital doctors are sh!t who do not even examine and prescribe Panadols!)

That’s some of the precautionary steps. I hope this H1N1 stuff will be controlled as else we can as from now itself call out little Island under crisis! This time it’s not a hoax.

UPDATE: Mauritius registered its First death case of H1N1 today evening! (8th August 2009). The lady who was on life support died of swine flu.

UPDATE 2: 9th August 2009 – 17 confirmed cases of Grippe A H1N1 confirmed in Mauritius.

UPDATE 3: 12 August 2009: 2nd possible victim of Swine Flu in Mauritius.

Update 4: H1n1 Status in Mauritius - University of Mauritius 2 Victims Already.

why is it in other countries where there are cases of swine flu people are wearing mask and in mauritius we are not . in hospital people having cough and sneezing fever are not wearing mask hence infecting other patient coming to hospital. government took a decision to put all cases of flu in one department its bull shit this decision it will contribute to spread the virus more rapidly,as people not knowing they have h1n1 virus will contaminate people having only flu.what should have been done when someone is sick doctors can visit patient at home and give medcine like it is being done in other countries in order not to spread the virus. some people like children are vulnerable , some people who have csf leak problem it is very dangerous for them asthma patient also it is dangerous

mr the minister jeeta should take care of mauritian people more effectively and intelligently

government is not taking this situation of h1n1 virus in mauritian seriously
mask shoulb be distributed among the population surgical mask only does protect against the virus. false information is being giving not to wear mask as government has not enough funds to buy surgical mask for everyone. in other countries school have been close disinfected why not in mauritius

no need to panic but mauritian should be aware of the risk of h1n1. first of all we should stop greeting people with kisses and hand shake for the time being just a hello and goodmorning will be enough. also mauritian should stop touching others babies and toddlers just because they are cute. if u really care for the welfare of these cute ones stop touching them just a hello or grimaciing to them from far away is enough. being a mom myself i have come across many people who try to touch my baby but i say stop it. as 1 can say stay away from my new car u should also be able to say stay away from my baby as he is much more precious than a car. mauritian should be more careful and cooperative not to spread thevirus willingly. infected person should stay at home where possible this does not apply for h1n1 only also for seasonal flu. simply precautionary measures can save a crisis.

I agree with Bruno, this might cause panic.

H1A1 flu is not that deadly after all. It’s like a bad flu. It’s only dangerous for people who are physically weak or old or the like.

However, I find it weird that 17 cases in Mauritius (for our small island) hasn’t triggered a crisis cell, and started the distribution of masks. Patients should be quarantined and be treated under special care. Where’s the Tamiflu when you need it?

Also, now with schools/colleges/uni resuming, there will be crowds and therefore, much more risks of propagation.

I find these posts too sensationalist. It’s not patriotic to propagate news that can make stupid people panic. This H1N1 virus does not kill more people than normal flu. People die from flu every year. Pffff Ban morisiens ki peur la mor seulement la!

If you’re genuinely worried about the swine flu, and you don’t really know what it is or where it came from, and you want to know more about it and what it means to you and your loved ones, then watch this short video:

My honest advice to anyone out there regarding any panic situation is to first, think clearly and logically. Question what’s happening first before you react.

If you are worried – ask yourself – WHY am I worried? If it is because you saw a commercial on television or read an article in the paper about swine flu and the deaths associated with it, ask yourself:

How many have actually died from swine flu?
Do I know anyone that has died from swine flu?
Has swine flu happened before, and if so what was the outcome?

These are all questions that you can answer by researching for yourself.

One last question you can ask yourself is this:

Do the Government and the Pharmaceutical companies really care about ME?

You may need to think long and hard about that final question but I’m sure that you’ll be able to find the right answer if you open some history books ;)

We have more than 650 such reported cases in India and one child actually died. Considering the population and underdone infrastructure, that count may not be alarming…still if it takes a real epidemic route, the situation may go out of hand.

I think Mtuis should put alert status and not take this issue so casually.
