Since long I read and heard that Google ignores meta keywords in a webpage while indexing it. I knew it and also never really care much about keywords. However today Google in their latest blog post confirm this piece of tips which was only a rumor till now.
Google just posted an interview of Matt Cutts where he explains how and why Google does not cater for meta keywords while indexing but also giving out results.
Personally I think this is an extremely good way to work as many people simply steal keywords and place them on the html meta code just as a way to steal traffic by providing nonsense content which is not relevant to what people are looking for.
I will not mention the site name, but recently I came across a site which has “island crisis” and “mauritius news” in its meta keyword tags even thought he has nothing to do with IslandCrisis.net and none of his articles are real news. (They were excerpts!)
Google does not read meta keywords however a point to know is that Google do read your whole content and description! The Google bot has become really wise in the last few years and now it can even select the most important part of your post and give this out in results.
Now some people can think they will use the keywords on the description tag, but be warned as Google also know who write it first. Even tricking you date of publishing does not work as each genuine post when published in ping. So cheating on the publish date to make as if you publish a stolen article before the original author will not work!
You can read more about this interview of Matt here where he explain more about this keyword policy and thumb up for this formula.

Extreme John
I’ve seen this story around a few times today, not really something I worry about anyway. Half of my websites don’t even have Meta tags and still get traffic.

@Extreme John, Yea. Even I use the tags just as a habit but at times I simply put just some words. Its of no use for Google SERP. The content matters most.
Web Design Bureau of Mauritius
Lol, dude, this is old news but if some mauritian sites think they can pawn your place (“être calife à la place du calife”) with meta keywords, they really should contact me, Adam or Zozua and pay for some SEO lectures…
