Nokia has today launched their new Nokia Braille Reader in lab version. Nokia Braille Reader is an application developed specially for blind people using Nokia mobile phones. The application uses Braille and also a tactile feedback to enable blind people to read SMS messages.

This application is a team work between Nokia, Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired and the Tampere University.
This new application will make some of Nokia touch screen phones a much more on demand product among visually impaired users. The application in fact render the SMS messages received into Braille characters and then uses the phone’s vibration system to communicate the characters to the user to that he can read the message.
Here is what Nokia explains about the usage of this application:
The Vibrating motor in the phone reads the Braille character out dot by dot, you feel a sharp pulse when a raised dot is present and a soft one when the dot is not raised. There is a pause between letters and a longer one between words, a longer buzz indicates the end of the message. The speed of reading and the lengths of the pauses can be controlled from the settings menu.
The Nokia Braille Reader can be downloaded here at the Nokia Lab.
As for compatibility issues, here are some Nokia mobile phones which can be used with this new application:
- Nokia N97
- 5800 XpressMusic
- N97 mini
- 5530
- 5230
- X6

Wow – nice for blind people, but it must still be hard to use any of the other phone features. Voice recognition will be more useful.
