9 KFC Mauritius Outlets Closed – Salmonela Bacteria Found!
Breaking: 9 outlets of KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) closing down in Mauritius as sanitary officers announced that that bacteria Salmonela has been found in over 10 tons of seized chicken meat from KFC Mauritius.
Update 17 th October: KFC is back to business! Yay!
Update 6th October: ALL KFC outlets are closed! Curepipe, Flacq and Rose Belle ones which were working till today were ordered to closed down too. So no KFC in Mauritius for now!
We got the news on 29 of September that the KFC outlet of Port Louis was closed due to strange odors in the storage room. However we got the news since some days about a private investigation in all KFC outlets in Mauritius and apparently this was NOT a rumor!
Today 8 other KFC outlets have been closed and they are:
- KFC Vacoas
- KFC Goodlands
- KFC Trianon
- KFC GrandBay
- KFC Mahebourg
- KFC St Jean
- KFC Rose Hill
- KFC Jumbo
Adding to it the already closed KFC of Port Louis, this makes it to 9 already. To note that over 10 tons of meat has been seized at KFC and recent test on these proves that the bacteria Salmonela is present in the meat!
What is the Salmonela Bacteria?

This bacteria is commonly found in poultry, eggs, and in meat. Salmonella bacteria affects the stomach and intestines and may even cause blood poisoning. Below are some symptoms of Salmonela poisoning if you eat these meat:
- Diarrhoea or constipation.
- Headaches.
- Stomach cramps.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Fever.
- Possibly, blood in the faeces.
Now the question that many Mauritian must ask is since when is there this problem with KFC! Have we been eating poisoned meat all this while?

If found guilty, the company should pay heavy penalty for playing with the health of citizens. All outlets in Mauritius should be closed for good. This is the price innocent people pay for trusting big labels and company. Their priority is to make money at any cost.

@Sonia, health. let’s also think about all the restos, “snacks” and unforgettable hawkers……..do you think they’ll…..What are we eating hey………..hawkers at bus stations….difficult to trust them, if we are having problems with big companies. What lies beneath, things that the sanitary officers cannot/ do not check.

@maryam,
My dear the sanitary officers desn’t exist in mauritius.. the main facts foods are sold everywhere on “lagare port louis near toilet they sell tomatoes and other vegetables on bus station …. lor trottoir and anywhere …..
so do ustill believe there is sanitary officers in mru????
I truely believe that there should be a strict law about food hygiene.

@Sonia,
It is not the fault of trusting companies like KFC or other big names but mostly the people in Mauritius where they use such big names to do bad commerce. This always gives a bad impact on the name like now KFC but the real culprit are those who are using the KFC franchise. If you check on the net you will find complaints dating since 2002 about KFC Mauritius being reported to thier main office but the main office cannot act as the Mauritius KFC is only a franchise and NOT KFC itself.

@Sonia, IMO I dont think KFC (the real copany and product) itself is to be blamed but rather it is the MAURITIAN company (pick & eat) who work using the label KFC in Mauritius.
As Billy said above, KFC is an international name and it only provides the name and the spice to work. However the chicken is from Mauritius itself and the problem is with the way KFC stores these chicken.
I think the government should either put a huge fine on KFC for playing with the health of people here but also the INternational Company (headquarter) shall take away the license of the Mauritius branches and allocate this to another more professional company here.

I thought about this too. Infact ok we agree KFC’s chicken were contaminated. But why only there a check? (There is Mc Donald, All the other chicken clones, so many restaurants…caudan etc). Also it will be good if KFC also get the right to have tests done on the seized chicken meat privately as well as third party tests by external consumer protection groups.
Coz these days IN MAURITIUS, we cannot really trust everything the government says. I don’t say KFC is not bad for health. It is! Heart diseases, cholesterol etc… but on this poisoned chicken stuff, I think Mauritians should have reports from not only the government laboratories. Do not forget that the election is coming soon and political parties needs funds. Funds are provided by these big companies. (Just like Samlo steel sold his A$$ previously so that he get the Minister title).
So this whole mess can ALSO (I do not claim it is…but it CAN) be a whole scenario to get KFC group to finance the actual parties and in return to clear this whole taint on KFC Mauritius.
I am not supporting KFC but this is one possibility.

Who would eat that crap anyway?? I mean it costs as much as (if not more than) a proper meal at a decent resto.. stay away people, contamination or not, all fast food outlets reuse the same oil for deep frying for abotu a week long..

@Mee, Huh I dont agree with you. KFC cost cheaper than a decent meal in a decent resto. If you mean to compare with a snack…then yea we can get a decent noodle etc less than kfc price…but if you comparing the same “value” product from kfc and resto..resto are more expensive.
Eg: For Rs55 you can get 3 large crisypy strips. While half of this chicken meat as fried snacks cost over rs90 :S

Better stop eating KFC.
There is no expiry date on the piece of chicken that they give and the Pepsi cup has no indication whether the liquid is out of date. Many people really got sick after eating this stuff. it is now that we know the reason for this problem.

all fast food – kfc, kebabs, dholl puri & curry, all fried “gato” etshc ould be checked thoroughly….not only kfc, sure they could get more companies small or big, to sue and more consumers to protect. if prohibition orders were to be served efficiently, fast food would be definitely banned in Mauritius.

Hello friends, today you are all talking about the KFC issues in Mauritius, but we don’t know if its true or not. Since the beginning og the KFC existence in Mauritius, none of us know the ingredients of KFC. It’s a secret…! We are using our limited money on these stuffs and we don’t know whats inside…! Frankly, we are sh*ts eating sh*ts, We may not eat dholl purri n roti on roads because of inhygenic conditions but we are paying 15 times more at KFC to eat something we don’t know the origins.
For me, this Salmonela bacteria may have existed long before but we were never made aware of this f*cking thing. Maybe there were political personalities or money investment involved???
We can’t blame KFC as a businessman because he’s doing his job to achieve profit, instead we should blame ourself for believing these sh*t food stuffs.
Today we are talking about inresponsibility at KFC, as a result several outlets are closed, but what about the hawkers near the bus staion at all our towns? All there products are sh*ts, useless, sometimes expensive and are not respecting the environmental norms but none is talking about them…
I think there must be some political involvement in this issue. The government may sue KFC, he will loose maybe around 100 votes, but if the government sues the hawkers, he will loose thousand of votes.
I still don’t know the exact reason why KFC is closes, but surely, I can see something fishy within

I totally agree with you. There is definitely something fishy abt the sudden problem which have arised at KFC. Y hold the dealer responsible when we Mauritians enjoy every bit of KFC.
If the problem really exists, then atleast there should have been 1 person who must have been its victim. But now, wat abt the employees of KFC??????? Whom will they turn too??????????? Ive been to KFc Mahebourg on Monday. It was jammed. So many people were there despite the increasing warnings by the media and yesterday when we passed by there it was closed. OMG. It really saddens us.
i miss u KFC

Get through one life without you?
If I had to live without you,
What kind of life would that be?
Oh, I…
I need you in my mouth, need you to eat,
You’re my world, my heart, my soul,
If you ever leave,
Baby you would take away everything good in my life,
And tell me now
How do I live without you?
oh my zinger!,
How do I breathe without you?
If you ever go,
How do I ever, ever survive?
How do I, how do I, oh how do I live?
Without you,
There’d be no sun in my sky,
There would be no love in my life,
There’d be no world left for me.
And I,
Baby I don’t know what I would do,
I’d be lost if I lost you,
If you ever leave,
Baby you would take away everything real in my life,
And tell me now,
How do I live without you?
oh my largepiece,
How do I breathe without you?
If you ever go,

How do I, how do I, oh how do I live?
Please tell me baby,
How do I go on?
If you ever leave,

it is not the KFC name to blame rather it is the mauritian company who have been working with the name. the KFC name would not always hide their misconduct and negligence.
it is not KFC doing wrong to mauritian people…rather it is the mauritian people (who are running kfc-mru) doing wrong to their own mauritian people.
they do not themselves care about the health and well being of their own people so are not in the position to be pointing fingers or hiding their heads under paper bags

Due to my involvement in Food Safety here in South Africa and the fact that our company was registered in MU in August 2008 (however still dormant) – I’ve been receiving numerous e-mails & calls from MU friends over the past few days regarding the KFC issue.
I agree with a lot of the above comments. When we purchase food from a restaurant, retail store, franchises etc. we expect the food to be safe – the possibility of bacterial contamination don’t even cross our minds. KFC is one of the biggest International franchise groups and I have no doubt that there will be appropriate corrective action by KFC Head Office to prevent a similar situation in future. The fact as mentioned above, is that the chicken was locally supplied, and this should be the focus point.
How involved is the Health Department of Government, Municipalities and District councils when it comes to Food Safety inspections, training etc. at all food premises in MU? It became clear to me during our visit in Oct ‘08 that there is some focus on the street vendors, but not on the bigger food manufacturing/processing facilities because officials assume they have Food Safety Management systems (FSMS) in place. A lot of these suppliers are certificied (HACCP, BRC, ISO etc.). One needs to understand that the certification only takes place annually or once in 2yrs. Are these systems maintained throughout the year and who verify (inspection) this?
I recall a few months ago, Mr Michael SikYuen (Curepipe Mayor) had major concerns i.t.o. general hygiene and food safety standards of a butchery at the Curepipe market. Similar concerns relating to Food Safety were raised by members of the public in the months that followed.
Food Safety incidents (food poisoning outbreaks) is the one thing MU cannot afford. Tourism is a very important source of income, imagine 100 000 people on the island get food poisoning – would the hospitals be able to handle such a crises?
My opinion; – get back to basics – ALL food handling facilities should be inspected by the Health Inspectors on a regular basis and Food Safety training should be a priority and a requirement for ALL staff members of such premises.

Hi Hanlie. You mentioned some really good points. I specially wanna point this one out:
This is very important as many people are directly blaming KFC (the label). Sure, KFC is fast food and fast food does have health issues but we need not mix up daily food habit with the current bacteria issue. In fact KFC Mauritius is supplied by Chantecler chicken. And again we must not blame the chicken meat provider because the actual problem was “the way KFC Mauritius stored the meat”.
You are also right about the certification delay. We never know.. Maybe when it is there to be an inspection everything shines but who knows how are the hygienic factors handled between the inspections. I think the company working under the label KFC in Mauritius is to be warned and also actions need to be taken but this does not mean to banned KFC from Mauritius.
