Physics Nobel Winners 2009 – Charles Kao, Willard Boyle & George Smith

Today the Physics Nobel Winners 2009 were announced. The winners are Charles Kao, Willard Boyle & George Smith. Yesterday after the Medicine Nobel winners were announced and today is the day for our heroic physicists 2009.

Their amazing work was to figure out how to convert light into electronic signals! Experts in fibre optics in a few words.

Charles Kao is a British-American who had to determine how to transmit light over long distances via optical glass fibres. The 2nd winner is Willard Boyle who is a Canadian. Third winner is George Smith of the US again who collaborated for inventing the first imaging technology using a digital sensor.

A small brief of their work as mentioned by the Nobel committee:

These low-gloss glass fibres facilitate global broadband communication such as the Internet. Text, music, images and video can be transferred around in the globe in a split second. It revolutionised photography, as light can be captured electronically instead of on film. And of course the Internet.

Again congrats to the Physics heroes due to which our life is…easier than before.
