Today 10 October is the World Day Against the Death Penalty and as usual every year the same debate and argument occurs about such judicial penalty. Some people are for it while some are against it but surprisingly a majority of people surveyed last year say that they are FOR death penalty.

Let’s start this discussion with some interesting figures. About 2400 people were executed last year across 25 countries of the world while 8800 people were sentenced to death in over 52 countries. Those countries which are highly targeted by anti death penalty groups are:
- China
- Iran
- Saudi Arabia
- USA
- Pakistan
Surprised about the USA too in the list? Well if you do keep in touch with the news, then you should not. As for Iran and the rest well this is no surprise, specially Iran and Pakistan.

Now let’s come to the actual debate. Some people are for this penalty while others are against it for distinct reasons. A recent study by sociologists in the USA showed a very interesting point of this choice. It is said that most people who are Pro-death penalty are usually people who have suffered from some criminal offenses or who’s close relative has been a victim while most people against this penalty are often people who have never been a victim of criminals.
Well the results indeed has a logic behind but still we must not also forget that there are many people who are Pro-death penalty for religious reasons or because of personal preferences. The question that we all ask on this 10 October is whether this penalty is legitimate and should we accept it. Personally I think at times we really need this law but then a death penalty law also has many disadvantages.

Many times people who are innocent are executed and later we find out that the person was innocent but life is once only! In countries such as USA there is a row and execution is done years after the court’s decision. So the person if innocent still has time to prove the opposite. However in some countries such as Iran, such penalties are often carried out within days or weeks only!
So the words are your’s. What do you think about this and what are your arguments about death penalty? Do you think it should be done in all countries including our’s or not?
