I have dual citizenship, Mauritian Included and live in Oz where voting is as you say,compulsory.This is a bit of a false statement, I ONLY NEED TO SHOW UP AT THE POLL,on that day, and what I do with the ballot paper is a different cuttle fish….I can as we say wipe my arse with it , or write a Dear Letter to Nahvin,or Aneerood, Papa Duvalier,little Richard included ,Popol, Gregroire , Rama ,Beebee,or Raj or the Mohamed brothers telling them to go JUMP.

Forcing a person to vote via legal means removes the freedom of the person on the “right not to vote”. Do not touch on the freedom of the people…

Mauritius should implement voting via the Internet [i.e. for registered / eligible voters (per constituency)]. Mauritius Cyber island????? Anyone who is familiar with Switzerland may refer to the model in place there (i.e. for voting via the internet).

Well Sanjay, lets put it that Mauritius has a population of 2.5 million and that 40% of the population is over 18 years old (Its just a suggestion), then there will be 1 million adult.

The 30% of adults who dont vote will be 30% of 1 million which is 300 000 people. Now lets say that three quarter of 300 000 people make their bulletin void, At least 75 000 votes will count. And that’s a significant number which can make a difference. Also, if people are forced to vote, they will be forced also to choose and make an opinion/decision.

I think that you cannot force a person to vote. Let’s say that voting is compulsory, do ou think the 30% of people who were not interested to vote will cast their vote appropriately? The voting can have no effect if these 30% makes their bulletin void. Thus, it all depends on the person.

The law of Compulsory voting might have brought some changes in the way that all votes goes either for PTR, MSM or other big corrupted parties and parties which is composed of people unqualified to be given the duty of leading a country. These 40% of people who don’t usually vote because they think its a waste of time to vote for corrupted politicians, might have voted for other small parties like lalit, etc which has a genuine interest for the wellbeing of Mauritius. At least more than 40 % of people would not have voted just to receive “backing”
