Google Chrome OS Is Coming – So What?

2009/11/15 - By Kurt Avish - 3,762 views

Google Chrome OS is expected to be released in a few days as announced or rumored by Techcrunch and many other sites in the last few days. However as exciting this release is faking to be, the reaction I have is “So What?” – Google Chrome OS will be released on a test version but some people are getting excited or faking it to be excited just because they are seeing their friends being excited.

Google Chrome OS Operating System Notebook

Some months ago I announced about Google Chrome OS too here. Google promised that the OS will be available as a first version before the end of 2009. So now everyone is expecting the OS to be available in the coming days but apart that Google Chrome OS will be a real revolution in the OS market, what’s more?

For those who are probably dreaming too much then here are some facts that you need to know about Google Chrome Operating System. Google Chrome OS will be a revolution when it comes to cloud based applications. Cloud based, that is most applications will be accessed online via the internet and as such it will not really depend on a too powerful machine to host its own applications.

But how far is the world ready for cloud based applications. For sure the geeks will find it cool but there is also a fact that many part of the world still does not have a decent internet connection to access all those applications. Even Youtube seems not easily usable with some internet connection speed. The users need to first download the video and then watch it.

Google Chrome OS can also further increase the dependency of the Internet for almost anything that can for now be done even without an Internet connection. The OS is not a bad idea but is instead a real evolution of computing but whether it will be accepted easily compared to Windows is another question. Google Chrome OS can be great for the notebook but will it be accepted on your powerful desktop beast at home or the office?

Will people prefer to depend on cloud applications (that is hosted elsewhere) and always have to connect to the internet to use it. Imagine you need to edit a photo and you connect to PhotoGoogle (Fake name) to edit your photo while a Photoshop application on your own PC would have made it in some seconds.

Many people are excited about it but many do not even know why they are excited. It is similar as the Google Wave buzz. Many were so excited to get a Google Wave invitation and finally they do not even use Google Wave to benefit to the max of it. Google Wave is a collaboration tool (an amazing one indeed) but how many of those who were nearly begging for a wave account are now disappointed as they thought Google Wave was Twitter Clone Reloaded?!

cloud computing

Well these doubts about Google Chrome OS are just doubts as Google is yet to answer real questions about it. Maybe we first need to wait and see what it will be about. Personally, I prefer to own my things rather than using things of others, unless it is an absolute need like Gmail or even Google. I will not go and create a search engine just for me or create an email application just for me. But I’ll rather have my Photoshop or even Video Player on my PC than to become 100% dependent on the internet.

Maybe my opinion might not agree with your’s and maybe it will change in some 5 or more years as things in the computing world evolve but for now in 2009 or even 2010, I do not really see Google Chrome OS taking the lead over Windows or even Linux. I may be wrong too and as such would like to know your opinion about this. :)

yah, its reallli nice for google doing his own OS… but as u said i, i dnt really think google to take the lead on WINDOWS, specially the new windows 7 is out… even Linux is used by a fair number of users… Windows still dominate the market!!!
But who knows ahead with open source!
MAC OS & WIN are much more ahead in dominating the market…!

Yea and adding to it, we just heard that Windows 8 is expected for 2012… so Google gonna have a hard time to really take the lead.

I completely agree with u and I really can’t understand why they don’t think of something more practical

I will not say that the Google Chrome OS is not practical. It has its own advantages for some users. But of course to completely replace computer OS at home and office or common use, then this will not be reasonable.

i think the worse thing they did was marketing their new platform os with the same, “codename” as their browser. thats like windows relasing, “Windows Explorer 8″ instead of windows 8. it will confuse many client-el im sure.. watch out for the fake beta though, none are the real deal. just bad imitations with linux red hat kernel developed with SUS. dont worry though, its supposed to pop its cherry TODAY!

Well you’re right. The fact is that there are still people around who are confused about Google Chrome and Chrome OS thinking that both are same.

This is a lot of bollocks. Do you really think that Google is not going to provide tools that you can run offline??? You are looking at Google as it was a little garage company.

lol :p Google doesn’t care if google chrome turns out bad or not.. chrome is a research project, it will definitely bring progress technologically… yes mere individuals and mere humans won’t feel it… just like mere individual don’t feel any difference with linux or bsd around, they will just live in the present…

several years after… when it has been polished.. it will be then that ordinary ppl will find it any useful or interesting, but sometimes others will never understand that craze of doing things nobody cares about just for the sake of… doing something that is new.

As for chromeOS, i don’t have much expectations out of it other than the fact that it will definitely bring more research on cloud computing.

As for current OS .. OSX and FreeBSD rulez :D :D:D and am eagerly expecting FreeBSD8.0 to come out :D rc3 is already out :D :D wooohooooo

Exactly. It is not right to say that Google Chrome OS is useless. It will be useful to some…while the majority will keep on using what is the trend and which they find easier to. It’s about time. But seeing Google Chrome OS on all PCs replacing Windows is not in the near future. The fact is even here we still have BS internet connection…without forgetting how many other countries have internet that sucks. South Africa nearby is a great example in itself.
