Michelle Obama Monkey Offensive Image on Google Results

2009/11/25 - By Kurt Avish - 64,759 views

Michelle Obama monkey and really offensive image on Google Image search results is back to the talk of the day. In case you don’t know what I am talking about, then go to Google Image and search for “Michelle Obama”. This is it! (See updates below)

Michelle Obama Monkey Offensive Image on Google Results

On the first result itself is a racist and offensive image of Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle Obama deformed in a monkey like photo. The fact that this picture is appearing on Google’s search result is creating the e-havoc. In fact, there was a similar picture on the results some time ago and it was removed by Google (details here) after receiving complaints.

Google said that the other website was also involved in malware distribution and as such it was breaching it TOS. However soon after removing that other similar picture from the results, here is a new one appearing again! This time Google has refused to remove it saying that the site hosting the image is in no way contradicting its TOS. (Visual Defamation?)

Google is even using Adsense ads on its Image Search result to explain why it is not removing the picture. See the photo above showing the black circled region showing the ads. This ads leads to a Google page where they explain as stated below:

google message about Michelle Obama Monkey image

In one way Google is right to not be removing this picture as explained above but on the other side there is also the ethic factor. Can anyone just go around and make fun of everyone in this simple way by uploading a photo?

Furthermore, the person who did this photo editing did a really absurd job! What did he intend to say? That black people are monkeys? It is time to stop this type of skin colour difference. Being white is in no way better than being black and so is the opposite too. We have fools in both white skin and black skin. So none is perfect.

Update: The blogger behind the mentioned mockery photo of Michelle Obama has removed the photo. The photo from the Google Search cache is expected to be cleared out automatically as time goes on. However for the answer to a WHEN, on this one only Google can answer. In the meantime Google stays firm on its decision to not manually remove the photo. As explained above, doing so will in a way influence the integrity of Google’s results. On the other side many people ask that the photo is flushed from Google Images results.

Update 2: The photo is no more to be seen on Google Images. As such even we have censored the SCREENSHOT above so as to no further propagate this very controversial photo. All end well finally :)

Hmmm I don’t know. I recall having an issue with the absurd and highly offensive Hitler Obama videos on YouTube and I could not find a single person that would agree with me that this was something that went “too far,” because Americans think hate speech is included in “free speech.”

    @Shane

It is. You cannot temper “Free Speech”. If you do, it becomes “Controlled Speech”.

This Michelle Obama vs. Google thing is as bad as people being imprisoned for “Thought Crimes”. For one, Google is not responsible for the images which are displayed when you use Google’s services to search for things. The real culprit is the individual who made the vaguely amusing photo in the first place.

Surely this man has a right to voice his opinion that Michelle Obama looks like a monkey (if that is even his opinion)? Or have people fought against oppression only for it to arise in the seat of “Democracy” and “Freedom”?

You are right Billy about the over reaction to this, although I have no idea what the site in question is trying to achieve, just a bit of fun perhaps. Obama will have to kill several million Americans before you can seriously associate him with Stalin. Do you have any idea what Communism is? A bit of social aid it is not. You rightly criticize the reaction to the ape picture only to hyperbole all over another issue. Hypocricy springs to mind.

    [Reply to this comment]

    Billy Reply:

    @Martin,
I don’t see the hypocricy… Yes Stalin is a very unfair comparison. That was my way of pushing my distaste lol. A bit of social aide went into effect a long time ago, we’ve been headed over the deep end ever since. People NEED to fail, they really do. It sucks that some people are unfortunate ( i by no means do extremely well) but one thing i am is responsible for myself. I don’t know when the breakdown started, but i assure you the engine behind it has been and still is that warm hug from uncle sam aka taxpayers. Aide is aide but when i go to the grocery store and see people in line using wic checks food stamps etc to buy essentials then pile up cases of crablegs and booze and cartons of cigarettes to purchase with the money they EARNED it pisses me off. It would be one thing if it was a small group that does this….. unfortunately it is the majority. Somone else is responsible for their problems apparently. The problem with aide and government run programs is that once they start it becomes the standard and people forget theyre lucky and want more. It’s like we’re politically correcting ourselves into retardation.

I am an expert on this. When I am President…look me up, we can have a beer over these issues. In the mean time educate your ignorant self.

As far as people abusing welfare i don’t care what race they are. I have a sister and an Ex wife both on welfare “white” both abuse it to no end. My sister actually has a nursing license that she refuses to use because she doesnt feel like it. Meanwhile she makes little enough to qualify. Her own doing. The ex has quit more jobs in the passed nine months than many people have had in their lifetime. I guess living off my thousand dollars a month in child support , and government aide makes her happy enough. For those of you who immediately started the thought process, “shes a single mother” forget about it. My child spends 50% of her time with me and i continue to pay the grand. I work two jobs when shes not with me so i dont have to live in a slum. AMENRA I grew up in California I didn’t even know lazy black people existed until recently, damn most black people i know are whiter than me. The aid abusers are NOT a specific race. Maybe it’s a locale issue I don’t know, but I know one thing for sure, I see more people crapping my taxes away than i do put them to good use.
ROYCE your 110 billion dollar financial institution? good job sliding in ego, i dont care if youre bill gates or how politically savvy you are. The way things are going by the time you become president there won’t be anything left.

    @Martin
You put me on the fence. Your conclusion towards the hungry leading to a drain on industry is logically sound. However there must be a cut off. It sounds in humane, cold hearted, whatever. There comes a point when the umbilical needs to be cut. If they continue to drain and put forth no effort guess what? This machine here stamps numbers in license plates. This is where you’ll live, you’ll work 40 hours a week stamping numbers, if you happen to get a real job on the outside you can remain in this housing for up to six months. After you’ve worked at your “job” more than six months you’re free to go and prosper. Don’t like license plates? Here’s a shovel, there’s the asphault, here’s the pothole.

As for everyone that really really really wants to label me racist, I’ll throw you a bone. Has anyone ever spent a year in Virginia as a white, lower middle class worker? (brace yourself) I know i’m going to catch a ton of flak for this one. 80% of the “african american” population here treat “white” people like we “owe” them something. They are rude, violent, and in most cases oblivious to anyone, but themselves. I do not think of myself as racist, however I will be the first to admit that my time here has given me a bias that i will not be able to budge from until i leave this hell hole of a state. If you would like to know where the stereotypes are coming from, they come from “real experiences”
AMENRA the cases of beer crossing the counter are Heineken. No it’s not racist to suggest black people like heineken either, take a poll i dare you lol.

    Amenra Reply:

@Billy, So what race of people that you are angry about on the welfare dole
That you saw purchasing crablegs and alcohol ?

Despite prevailing stereotype, Whites, not Blacks, collect greatest share of public aid dollars

SAY the word “welfare” and immediately the image of the lazy Black welfare queen who breeds for profit surfaces in the minds of those who have come to believe the hideous stereotype. It is a myth that persists despite government figures and authoritative studies showing that Whites overwhelmingly reap the lion’s share of the dole. So go and research who really be drinking alcohol with the welfare dollars.

    [Reply to this comment]

    Martin Reply:

@Billy, OK not hypocricy, just a bit of hyperbole then. I don’t agree with your opinion, though I can see that they are held with conviction. Welfare is open to abuse but this is not the norm as most people do appreciate the help and often feel ashamed at needing it. If there aren’t penalties for abuse then the system has been poorly implemented.

Allowing companies (and indeed there is an argument for banks) to fail is right for free market dynamics. Protecting industry through government bailouts or subsidies creates innefficient and flabby business as well as a few very wealthy individuals. Allowing monopolies to form also inhibits wealth creation. The market needs light touch control to keep it working efficiently.

The argument cannot be extrapolated to people though. Allowing people to go hungry and to live on the street has a huge finacial and social cost that feeds back into the workforce. Fair wages and basic protection against the loss of work creates a healthy workforce that can be flexible and after all… this is the backbone of industry.

We don’t owe the minority crap. If the “minorities” would spend more time working and less time screaming “racist” and making special labels for themselves things would be much easier. I understand that it’s not the majority of a specific minority that uses crutches, but if minorities want peoples opinion of them to change then they need to be louder than the ones that tarnish it. Most of the minority stereotypes are brought on by their own people. Personally I am labeled racist most of the time because i voice an opinion about labels. “african american” no youre a u.s. citizen, youre an AMERICAN no precursor necessary. “latin american” no you’re american. I have the same issue with learning “black history” in school, is it world history african history or american history choose one. Im tired of the double standards and for that I will always be labeled a racist. take “BET” black entertainment television, for example, if there was a white channel it would be labeled racist. I also have a huge issue with the term “reverse discrimination” it’s not REVERSE discrimination its flat out discrimination it’s not a one way street, it happens in all directions which is something that minorities need to get straight.

The image is quite disgusting and disturbing, but no way should Google remove it. There are plenty of images out there that are offensive, but that’s no reason for Google to take an image down because it offends some people. Even if they wanted to take it down, it would be a horrible precedent to set — they’d have tens of thousands of inquires about images that should be removed because they offend somebody in one way or another, and that would absolutely spur lawsuits, at least here in the USA, and that’s just bad PR for a search engine to remove a search result because somebody’s feelings are hurt because they — the searcher — finally realizes that the world isn’t full of people with good intentions.

If that image is breaking the law wherever Google is, then maybe somebody can force them to take it down. Otherwise, leave it alone. There are ways to remove images from search engines and their listings that don’t involve going through the search engines.

Also — with all this talk of ‘michelle obama’ and ‘monkey’ being talked about on the same pages, interlinked between high-profile websites, used next to each other in page names, blogged about, twittered about, etc — even by adding comments to this blog, you (me, everybody) is increasing the chances of her name being associated with the animals on Google’s main search page. What would you say then? It’d be all of our faults at that time ….

Get fact, stop taking hearsay as the gospel. Become informed, Konnie, before you open your mouth about equality in sex, race, or whatever. And FYI, if you noticed, Sara Palin’s family IS the inaccurate and negatively stereotyped “black family”. She gets clowned, BY WHITE PEOPLE, due to that to.

You, like a bunch of people with your attitude, are not smart enough to get real information about what you’re speaking about, you just take what your daddy or your radio host- who purposely misleads you- says as truth. Your arguments are exactly the same as the next person with your views, because you just repeat stupidity without checking, because you’re too lazy to research, or not smart enough to research and make your own conclusions. You’d be more accurate and have better arguments if you did.

Personally, I think the photo is stupid and offensive. However…

To the author: Your statement about “optimizing a photo to reach search engine results” is naive. The days of gaming Google’s PageRank are long gone. This photo appeared because it has been linked to thousands of times, not because the webmaster used a link farm. When Google checks a suspicious/reported site or image, they make sure the PageRank isn’t being gamed.

To @Josephine McDonald, @Meritha Paul, @Sally M: Do you get offended at the weatherman for reporting the temperature? Do you get offended at the anchorman for reporting economic trends? Don’t be offended at Google for showing the most-linked-to-picture, be offended at the population segment who linked to it so much.

Google isn’t your problem, and the popularity of this stupid photo isn’t Google’s problem. This is the “tyranny of the majority” at work. (Look it up on wikipedia.) If you don’t like the outcome, start a campaign and get all your friends to link to a decent photo instead…. do that enough and your picture will win. And the fools who linked to the monkey picture will shed a tear… despite all their pleas, Google won’t take down YOUR picture either. See how it works?

    And finally,

To @Meritha Paul and @J Paffe:

Do you people really want Google to “take down” anything that offends you? Because you realize, don’t you, that means Google would have to “take down” anything that offends anybody else, right?

Read Ray Bradbury’s “Farenheit 451″ and see your future. Here’s a passage where a fireman named Beatty is talking. Except in this novel, firemen don’t put out housefires, they start them. They burn houses where the occupants are hiding illegal contraband: books. All to keep the peace, and to protect people like you from being offended by something.

“Colored people don’t like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don’t feel good about Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Burn it. Someone written a book on tobacco and cancer of the lungs? The cigarette people are weeping? Burn the book. Serenity, Montag. Peace, Montag. Take your fight outside. Better yet, into the incinerator… If you don’t want a man unhappy politically, don’t give him two sides of a question to worry about, give him one. Better yet, give him none. Peace, Montag… We stand against the small tide of those of those who want to make everyone unhappy with conflicting theory and thought.”

He/She is projecting a disfuntional personality with a hate to the authority. Probably his/her mother was not kind enough with him or her. Generally, skin colour is the determinate of “race”. Racial differences exist, whether they are politically correct or not. Nature exists, and it does not consult us before it decides something.

Whites and Blacks are different, the former more apt for intellect, the latter more apt for physical prowess. This is a result of evolution. Different groups within the same species will develop different traits depending on their environment. If Whites and Blacks had never met, it is conceivable that the two “races” could have become separate species, a long time down the line.

Insults like this proves to the world that there are still people in and outside of America who enjoy the suffering and racism of minorities, in and outside of the- America. One should remember the truth and what the world knows; the beginnings/foundation of America was built on an evil curse called Slavery. The founders of America had Slaves. George Washington had Slaves, Thomas Jefferson fathered children from Slaves, Benjamin Franklin also fathered children from Slaves, etc. There are still people with hideous and hypocritical moral souls who still enjoy these kinds of indignities, so what does that say about moral standing of America in the world? How can America give moral advice to any other nation? Get the picture? They can say, you (America), a nation that hasn’t come to grips with its own moral conscience and about its Slavery past, how can you even attemped to try to advise the rest of the world about Human Rights when you continue, even in the 21st century, to enjoy indignifying the descendence of slaves who have fought for Human Rights since their enslavement? Hopefully, this is not the true soul of America, but we will see, won’t we. America will be judged before the eyes of all mankind, morally and spiritually, there is no doubt about that.

    Two things.

    1. Human Rights exist only in the minds of Humans. Nature does not care for us.

    2. The majority of White people bend over backwards to accommodate a non-White population which is failing in a White civilisation/society. The fault is not in Slavery, but in Modernity, which is, essentially, a corrupt form of European culture, with most of the “culture” removed. I wonder if anyone with real integrity and real values has ever been “successful” in such a world…

If you can even hear me, you and other hate-filled people like you (regardless of race) should sit still and try to listen to your conscience. Is all this hate and anger who/what you are? If so, does this make you proud? If you try to calm the lies and excuses you have been fed (there is no shortage of ugly stereotypes about whites) maybe you can find a grain of truth that sheds light on the darkness you are living in.
If God is love and not a vindictive petty fallable human, he is not going to have a group of children to hold one as superior over its siblings. Our worth is in the good we are and contribute, not an accident of birth like location and skin colour.

Also a God of HATE! ‘Jacob I have loved, Esau I have HATED’ Listen to David, a man after God’s own heart, he ask ‘Am I to love those who hate the LORD?’ If God were all lovie-dovie, why would a man like David ask this question.

But here we are talking about mixing the races. You cannot have the mixing of races without problems! You must have separation! History proves this time and time again. You must WAKE UP and see the truth! Even the Bible talks about racial separation!(Your name implies you are awake, but you are asleep. Asleep in satan’s lies. You are deceived. How do you know you are deceived if you are deceived? Ask God to remove any deception that you have fallen for, including, but not limited to who His true people are.) You must know who God’s chosen people are! They are not Christ haters! jews are Christ haters, ANTI-CHRIST through and through! Do your own research for a change and stop following the blind, deceived masses.

You know, President Bush was portrayed as a monkey hundreds of times during his term, sometimes even on national television! Why did no one cry out then? Oh, because it wasn’t racist then? Am I right? See, you people who act so offended only serve to reinstate racism in this country. You remind us that black people can’t be called monkeys, because they are different! The very fact that take a racist defense against such an analogy, (the very same analogy used with Bush), is racist in itself. You pull the black man down with such double standards. Think about it out. A white man is called a monkey and its all in good fun, but the black man is called a monkey and he needs a defense. You belittle the black man with a defense where the white man needs none at all! I’m just showing you the bigger picture here, I didn’t paint it. I taught college students, faculty and staff how to conduct online research for over 15 years. Never at that time did I ever see so much misinformation. I say this having had information was/is my domain. I am, like Michelle, an educated, multi-degree, and proud African-American woman. The comments expressed HURT. This was not because I dislike your political agenda. I also have had both concentrations and jobs relating to public policy so I’m familiar with the “turf.” I will struggle not to dislike YOU all (and those who proved to not have any form of class). As a mother, I teach my daughter to not be like those who would compare her looks to an historically offensive symbolic graphic of a primate. As my grandmother used to say… the best revenge is success. I was digging for information and found (as one can often find on the net) a lot of dirt. Is this what your parents taught you? To take highly educated people who jumped more hurdles you could not hardly imagine to become who they are only to compare them with (again I repeat) a “HISTORICALLY” known insult. Women, listen! You sit at your computers and join the ranks of males who objectify a woman who crushed many a glass ceiling? That is not only ignorant, but divisive amongst your own… as female. All I can do is shake my head and say —yep, allow you misinformed, ill-socialized peeps say who and what you are. Maya Angelou once said, When people tell you who they are, BELIEVE them. You all spewing this hatred are the true negative caricatures you try to pass off as funny. If you knew HISTORY and not (his-story), you would understand why we (as African Americans) find this offensive. This is offensive since it was historically used against us as a justification to commit abominable acts of human crime. It is not simply calling someone a primate as being in poor character and taste (which it is), but it has implications that went and still go far back in time that makes this insult take on another hideous form. It DOES hurt. Not just one individual’s feelings, but it also hurts one’s soul. It represents a disrespect that goes beyond the individual. You all who believe what you want or choose to believe. My choice is to believe you are clueless about American history, about history around the world and the more you talk, the more you vomit your lack of intellect for all to see…we all will make judgements and conclusions about you. Keep providing us with the information we need to see you all for who you are NOT. You are NOT very good people who have the right, yes, to show and tell us what we know IS correct. That correct bit of information is that more education is needed in this country for ALL (not just for inner city minorities who want to learn). Too many mis-educated people… Whoa, way too many.

@DaSource, I want to commend you in taking the high road in the face of so much hate and stupidity. Very courageous to actually try to enlighten people who reside in a very deep, dark hole. I fear most of them are unable to understand or take in your eloquently written plea for deeper understanding and awareness. A huge part of the blame should be placed on the lack of black history taught in schools. There should not have to be ‘black history’, but COMPLETE history where not only the oppression of African Americans is taught but the contributions and participation in major historical events by blacks is included. The same goes for Native Americans, Latinos, etc. In this way, not only the ignorance of the zenophobes would be addressed, but the self image of those black youth who never get to hear about their own history and end up believing some of the same distorted image that American society is projecting on them.

@DaSource, I forgot to mention that if a balanced perspective of history is not taught in our educational system, caucasion youth end up with an equally distorted view of themselves. They get a version of history that downplays barbarian acts perpetrated by whites and, as a result of omitting everyone elses contribution, makes it seem as if white society is the sole engine of progress in the world. Thus the condescending, paternalistic, and ignorant garbage spouted on the internet and sometimes even history books.
    Example:
When white men win in combat with Natives, even if only women and children are present , history books refer to this as a “Battle”.
If Native warriors are victorious over white men, it is a “Massacre”.

The funny thing is that All people resemble each other because we share the same genotype. If she looks like a monkey We all are a bunch of apes. Growing up I was taught to hate white people. I was told that white people balked at the chance to grant tangible equality to black people. They said not only are blacks inferior but they are little baby monkeys always needing to be told what to do. What would they do with land and a mule. I was taught that the white devils will have their day and that day is called the REVOLUTION. A gathering of people of color to overthrow and eliminate our slavemasters and their children. I beleived that for a while until I traveled, went to school and got some education through interaction. I found that we are all the same despite our color differences. I fell in love with all people because every one has a distinct perspective in life which is needed in problemsolving. My mind was changed I love white people, asians, latinos, blacks. I really beleived in the american thing until Uncle Barack Obama got elected. I was happy for a while with the progression of this country. It was showing my family was wrong this whole time after all. Then people started making racist comments about him and his family. Making death threats. I got scared. Not for myself but for him and for white people. Some people dont know how sensitive we are about our leaders since MLK and X have been assasinated. To say the least we are willing to die for him if any harm comes to him or his family you will see the end of america as you know it. Please stop spreading the hate. Learn to adapt or we all will suffer the consequences of our ignorance. We can make the dream of america tangible if we can just get over this bump. The Racial issue is going make us kill ourselves..

@KillerApe, I appreciate your comment(s) too. I grew up in a very diverse and multi-ethnic Queens NYC neighborhood although there were few caucasians. In my local community (radius of a mile), most were people of many colors from every part of the globe. It could be easy to live in a box and feel a dislike towards a group you don’t have daily contact with aside from place of employment. That is why education is so important. I don’t only say that because I am a librarian and assistant professor, but I say that since there is so much MIS-information about the world we all share. Not enough or incorrect information can be toxic and often is. In college I first wanted to learn about myself, other cultures and psychology so I’d have a clue as to why people do and say what they may do. People are always hiding behind that “I don’t need to be politically correct” nonsense. What they don’t realize is they are telling use — I don’t care about you or what you been through or where you wish to go or what you think or what will happen to me when you hear what I say. Now that is not only being “politically incorrect”… that is also being socially incorrect, morally incorrect and anti-many better things to be. In the extreme it could also be dangerous if you come across another morally incorrect person like yourself who has nothing to loose by deciding to erase you as well as your “incorrect” comments. Be careful folks. Words may only be words to you, but there are a lot of people who are either in the midst of a blind rage due to a whole host of reasons you may not care to know or just MEANER than you. Have your opinions that’s fine. Just remember we ALL go through things, we all can be judged too harshly and the better you behave, the better others might be towards you too especially when you might need them… be smarter and be civil. When you dig in dirt…the only thing you get is DIRTY.

@Wakeup …I just wish to thank you for taking the time to read my reply to all those slinging so much unkindness and dirt. Again, thank you for your comments and not just for agreeing with much of what I said, but for your cool head and thoughtfulness as well as thought-provoking manner. We need more of that on these blogs. People who THINK and who READ A LOT.

Everyone must understand…I try to not allow ignorant statements get to me, read them and just keep browsing seemingly untouched by the heat flares. Yet, there are times when you feel the sting. Not just because someone made an insensitive comment, but because you know something else is wrong beyond the statement. Why would someone spend their time putting another down in such a cheap way regardless of political stance or what you consider “beauty” (or non-beauty) to be. What would cause another woman who may not necessarily be vogue cover material herself to say something they KNOW is demeaning to another woman who DESPITE socio-economic circumstances got to the upper crust. The caucasian or western style of beauty is just one interpretation. For me she is a beautiful dark strong afro regal warrior and not some delicate pale starved so-called beauty we see everyday. Maybe the cheap shot at her looks is only that for some–AND if that is so… how sad is that!?! People are able to think whatever they want (and will). It is another thing to act on it. In my neighborhood there is another saying regarding “checking oneself” and that goes here. You must be able to check your behavior before you act (or at least think about what you did after) causing the possible harm. I may have my feelings on what I consider to be beautiful (and what is not); however, what I do what with those feelings indicates the true person I am. I was raised not to hurt when unnecessary. I was raised to believe you “check yourself” before you put someone down on something as shallow as looks which is one of the most subjective realities known to humankind. I try to instill that in my daughter as well. You don’t just hurt because you CAN. Another person can come right behind you and call out all of those things they find “unattractive” about you too. It is incorrect, insensitive, childish and undermines one’s ability to be taken seriously. Do not tell me to grow-up and take (or witness in silence) those mean stabs especially if you yell non-racism and follow it up with clearly “racist” comments or doctored pics. The ones being mean without a reasonable cause need to grow-up. I even spotted some possible (beyond 35) matured individuals and that was plain awful. People who lived beyond a certain age should know better and disengage from such useless acts of unkindness. If socialism and communism is to be worried about according to many, what about “demeanism” (my made up word). Demeaning people for sport is by far much more scary to me than any, be it extreme, political system.
