Emtel Mobile Broadband is an Internet access service provided by Emtel in Mauritius. In simple words it is a broadband internet access which is mobile and flexible and you can use it ANYWHERE.

Here is how it works! To use Emtel Mobile Broadband you must have an Emtel Sim and you will need to buy the mini modem (which is shown in the picture below). The modem is a bit expensive and cost Rs 3500 (Vat Included). However for the flexibility it provides I think the modem’s price is worth it.

So once you buy the modem at Emtel, they will register the service for the selected package of your choice. Emtel Mobile Broadband comes with a choice of packages depending on your need. Normally Emtel Mobile Broadband is advised for usage when you are on the move. I personally will never recommend someone to take this as the default Internet Access at home as people tend to use much bandwidth at home by downloading movies, games and many large files.
Below are the available packages of Emtel Mobile Broadband and their prices. 2GB Bandwidth for example mean that for Rs749 you can download, upload or surf for 2GB (Approx 2000MB) of data.

With 2GB of Bandwidth you can easily enjoy about 40 hours of “normal” web surfing (excluding very high bandwidth usage sites such as online gaming and online videos).
The packages are great for people with mobile needs. For example you are going to the university and you got your laptop with you but the wifi at the university is not available. So you just need to plug in the little modem and you get the fastest internet speed in Mauritius! Yes I mean it!
You must then be thinking that Emtel Mobile Broadband is not really affordable due to the limitation of bandwidth? You are right but this package is meant for specific needs and people. Emtel Mobile Broadband enables you to have HIGH SPEED internet access everywhere (on the beach, school, work, bus and even in your girlfriend’s bedroom) and is meant for people who need to access the internet at different places each time.
However for home use Emtel also propose another solution which is the Emtel Wimax (less known but extremely powerful). There is also MyT and Orange ADSL for home usage. You can read more about Emtel Wimax here.

broadband
High speed broadband has certainly altered how most people interact with the internet, broadband mobile seems as though it will have much the same impact, along with all the products coming on to the market such as touch screen phones and so forth the web may extend its reach further more and will bring it more frequently into our lives.

Horrible Upload speed:
EMTEL mobile broadband download speed are acceptable (depending on location and concurrent users of-course). In the Ebene area where I live, I do get acceptable download speeds. Upload is very terrible however.
On all speed tests I have conducted (even EMTEL themselves when they came to my house), the maximum upload speed I got was 45kbps. I usually average 20-35k.
This is unfortunately not good for me as I wait for Mauritius Telecom’s MyT connection.
