Emtel Wimax Broadband Internet is a less known Internet Service provided by Emtel in Mauritius. Most people know about Emtel Mobile Broadband and often confuse Emtel Wimax with the previous one.

Emtel Wimax is an Internet Service Access provided mostly for businesses but the Wimax Professional Package of Emtel Wimax is also available for home usage. I took Emtel Wimax last week and until now I can say I am extremely satisfied. Emtel Wimax uses the Wimax technology and in simple words it means wireless internet but Emtel also guarantee a clear and reliable service (which is not the case with the others YET). Below is an extract as Emtel Wimax mentioned about it:

emtel wimax

As mentioned, Emtel Wimax comes in 3 different MAIN packages and they are Wimax Professional (The home version), Wimax Business and Wimax VPN (Virtual Private Network).

emtel wimax services

The one we are using here is the Emtel Wimax Professional which is also available in 128kbps and 256kbps by the way. (They are not shown in this diagram above sent to us by Emtel).

Emtel Wimax Professional comes in 5 different speed packages and they are as shown below along with their prices:

  • 128 kbps : Rs 975 (Vat Inclusive)
  • 256 kbps: Rs 1090 (Vat Inclusive)
  • 512 kbps: Rs 1953 (Vat Inclusive)
  • 1 Mbps: Rs 6772 (Vat Inclusive)
  • 2 Mbps: Rs 13798 (Vat Inclusive)

Here is a pdf file to view all the price list details for the other Emtel Wimax offer (Business + VPN)

You must be thinking Emtel Wimax is not the cheapest Home ADSL service by now? Yes you are right but the difference in price also reflect the difference is Reliability and Professionalism of Service. The service is recommended for those who need a reliable broadband. (There is an upcoming article to compare Broadband services in Mauritius coming tomorrow – Be sure to check by).

How to subscribe to Emtel Wimax?

For this you will have to call on 4989898 and request a call transfer to Wimax department. Emtel will send some technicians to do a free home test at your house the next day and if you agree to subscribe, they will install the equipments shown in the first photo above on the 2nd day itself. Below is a picture showing how Emtel Wimax for Home works:

The installation fee is Rs 1600 and then you only pay for the subscription each month. Emtel Wimax is less known to the public as it is mostly used by businesses but at places where MyT is not available, Emtel Wimax is a very good solution. For those who wants reliability instead of cheaper prices, then here too Wimax of Emtel is recommended.

By the way, with Emtel Wimax you have UNLIMITED download and upload. Below are spme speedtests done with Emtel Wimax 512 from different servers yesterday.

Nice again LOL! But what about the different upload or download speed you receive on different servers/websites? And is there something like Akamai or faster download speed for Mauritian servers? Please share them!

Speed test results max download “connection” speed I got upto 690kbps and upload result was around 480.

Thats connection speed. As for the Akamai a test on nullsoft gave me upto 90 download speed of the file… so I assume only Myt have this 2mb Akamai download option.

wanna know something, for the wireless connection do you have to buy some USB plug to receive the wireless connection?MyT gifts you when they first installed it but I have to buy another one for my sis pc.

    Kurt Avish Reply:

@Gaia, Not really. I didn’t have to buy since there is already the wifi option in my laptop.

But if you wish to use it on a home pc, then you can use cables or you will have to buy a wifi plug. I am not sure if Emtel gives that.

which connection speed did you subscribe? are the download speed and upload speed same? (symmetric). i am more interested in the the upload speed rate!

Actually got a 2 mega ADSL, download is fine 260KB/s (about 2080kbps) – about 3.4-4gb per 24 hr – but since it is ADSL, i got only 256 kbps upload. pretty slow for ftp and upload, file hosting (on my personal ftp server), home CCTV system.

emtel seem a good choice. waiting for feedback

reliability and unlimited are the key words. hihi

Even am very satified with Emtel but i still haven’t managed to get those speeds that you got in the speed tests.

Downloading a ~475mb film from a torrent took bout 4 hours and when downloading an app through iTunes I was easily getting about 510kbps

And when uploading files over to mediafire.com I was getting speeds of around 400kbps

torrent are not good indicator for a test. download speed and download rate depends on several factors if you are using torrent files. (peer to peer). try download a big file from a server. (directly from the server)

    Bonjour,

    Great artical!

I am considering relocating to Mauritius (I hope!) and the only thing standing in my way is internet reliability. I have understood that some of the companies have substantial down time? is this true? How about with Emtel?

I am thinking of living in Grand Bay, do you know if Emtels service area includes Grand Bay?

  9. Broadband internet has certainly changed the way we all have interaction with the internet, mobile broadband seems like it’ll have much the same impact, with all the products coming on to the market for example smartphones and so forth the web will broaden its reach even more and will carry it more frequently into our lives.

    Hi everyone,
will my brand new HTC evo (4G) be able to connect directly to the Emtel Wimax network? Therefore everywhere be connected…

    [Reply to this comment]

    Airbag Reply:

    @HTC Evo,
You’re out of luck Evo uses wimax only for data. you need a cdma network for the phone to be able to make phone calls and one with evdo support for 3g level operation. EVO won’t work here. My sadness was palpable when I saw what the HTC supersonic was really =[
