Today Tamils in India celebrates Thiruvannamalai Karthikai Deepam. This festival is one to celebrate light and the lamp. It occurs on the day when there is a full moon day and the moon is in conjunction with the Pleiades constellation.

The festival is often confused with Deepavali in western countries however this one is celebrated only by Tamils in Tamil Nadu. Today 1st December 2009 is Thiruvannamalai Karthikai Deepam 2009. Houses and streets are lit up with rows of oil lamps.
One fact that many people do not know is that this festival was celebrated even much before Deepavali was first celebrated and is one of the oldest festivals of India. However it is less known to the world. On the day of Karthigai festival, the Tiruvannamalai hill is illuminated by a huge fire lamp at the top as shown below.

The huge lamp is called the Mahabharanidheepam, where Hindu devotees pray to the Hindu god Shiva. Happy Thiruvannamalai Karthikai Deepam 2009 to those celebrating it.

Do we have way to go for thiruvannamali top of hil, if yes will they allow anytime or any resctrisctions are there, and how much time will take for reaching to that hill from main temple.
