Welcome to IC again my lovely readers. This is the first post of 2010 on Island Crisis. So I decided to start with the announcement for IslandWebsite.info – The good news is that Island Website’s is nearly complete and the site redesign to reflect the new year 2010 is completed.

The site is looking a bit weird in the screenshot above, so I’ll ask you check it here. So what was done? Firstly the whole website has been redesigned. The previous design was ok but I needed something lighter and also very customisable but yet with a more modern look. So above you can see the new Island Website compared to the old black one.
After the 2nd version of the data extractor in August 2009 (read here), the last main job that remained was too build the automatic grader system. Well it is done. The automatic grader is set to update its data on an interval of 60 days where web metric for each listed site and blog will be calculated to illustrate the top blogs and top websites in Mauritius.
Multiple factors are taken into consideration while ranking the sites and blogs. For example, you will maybe be surprised to see that the grader is listing the Government website (gov.mu) as being the top website in Mauritius even though the design of gov.mu is among the worst of the world!
However there is a logic behind. The Government website is one having the most important information for our country which is a plus point! The site also have backlinks from many high pr sites and is also visited by atleast 2 to 3 thousand visitors daily!
The grader system does not only look upon the site html structure but also consider various web metrics such as page rank, alexa rank, technorati rank (for blogs), number of indexed pages, number of REAL distinc backlinks based on Google results and also the SEO performance of the site.
Same as the above goes for blogs. There is however a small job to be done to finally take Island Website out of beta. There is currently a problem to properly evaluate the alexa rank of “some” subdomain (that is those on free co.cc or co.nr). For the time being we are using a standard value as Alexa for those sites using these two free virtual domain names.
Well finally one freelance project of IC which is nearly completed. (IC Projects are normally on beta for months if not years lol). Those who have been submitting their site for personal profile page inclusion, don’t worry. I received all your emails and was only waiting for the completion of this work to further add more profiles of bloggers.
Some quick links to browse Island Website:
- To check specific profile pages, just search the blog within the search bar there and view the page.
- To view list of top 60 blogs of Mauritius.
- To view list of top websites in Mauritius (List is still being added with new sites).
- To view list of top blogs and websites both included in Mauritius.
So with that, ends the first post of 2010 on IC.
Happy New Year AGAIN.

Web Design Mauritius
Really nice job.
Moricien
Hi
We really like what you are doing. IF we knew about this beautiful idea of yours we would not have built moricien feed . Ours sound like a copy with less features.
But wondering how the automatic grading works and how accurate will the data be?
Kurt Avish
Automatic grading consider the basic of web metrics. Includes: Pagerank, Alexa, Google listed pages, Links incoming to the site based on Google, Technorati grade for blogs, Average visitors per months based on Alexa and Compete.com, RSS Subscribers for blogs, and a manual field based on CSS structure of the site. All this combine to create an average point on 100.
About accuracy, normally there is a 60 days stable transit. Changes are noticeable over long period of time. As such updates to the rank are done only after 60 days. There is of course the error factor like in any website grading system. Can’t really update the rank everyday, since one run of the update process itself uses lots of the compute cycles of the cloud servers we are hosted at.
