Thaipusam Cavadee In Mauritius 2010

Today 30th January 2010 Mauritius celebrates the festival of Thaipusam Cavadee. This celebration is done in Mauritius but also in other countries such as Southern Parts of India, Malaysia, Singapore and Reunion Island.

Across the world, the festival of Thaipusam Cavadee is mostly celebrated by people of the Tamil Community but in Mauritius it is now celebrated by citizens of the overall Hindu community. Thaipusam Cavadee is also called Thaipooyam Cavadee and is celebrated as the birthday of the Hindu deity Muruga.

According to Hindu mythology, Muruga is the youngest son of the Trinity Lord Shiva. He is mostly recognized as carrying the spear also called Vel.

On Cavadee day people will carry the Cavadee (which means burden) as shown in the photos in this post. This act as a sacrifice to carry something heavy but beautifully decorated and containing photos of Muruga. Devotees also pierce their skin and tongue with neutralized needles.

Today the Thaipusam Cavadee will be celebrated in Mauritius and people across the country will also help to throw water on the burning hot roads of Mauritius to help those walking bare foot with their cavadee. With this I wish all who are celebrating a Pious Thaipusam Cavadee 2010.

Update: We have added some exclusive photo shot today at Vacoas for Cavadee 2010 along with  videos of the event (shown above). All included in this post. The video quality is a bit low because it is hosted on youtube. I’ll try to upload an original copy that we have here for download in the coming hours. The full video is about 200 MB. Enjoy and share.

As a Tamilian living in Malaysia, I feel so proud of the people of Mauritius. We in Malaysia have quite a vibrant Tamil speaking society with close links with Indian culture.

In your country, you have a smaller population of Hindus but you have preserved your culture very well.

I would be very happy to receive email from people of your contry.
