Kurt Cobain, lead singer of the band Nirvana, died on April 5th 1994 in Seattle, Washington. The circumstances of his death have been widely reported. After going missing for several days the singer was found in his home by a workman who reported finding a gun and a suicide note near the body.

Kurt Cobain had for some time suffered from clinical depression and had frequently been using drugs in the time leading up to his death. The presence of a suicide note was taken as further evidence to support the suicide theory.
Whilst many believe that a tragic suicide took place there is an alternative theory about the events leading up to the singers’ death. The main proponent of this theory is a private investigator called Tom Grant. He was initially hired by the singers’ wife, Courtney Love, to find her husband in the days before his death. He has proposed that the star has been murdered and cites several unexplained facts as circumstantial evidence for this theory.
The official toxicology report found levels of cocaine in Cobain’s bloodstream that were so high as to render him incapable of pulling the trigger. These findings are controversial. It has been noted that it is difficult to pinpoint the exact level of narcotics required to render a person incapable, especially if they have been a habitual drug user.
No legible fingerprints could be found on the gun and according to reports the gun had not been tested for fingerprints until some weeks after the fatal shots were fired.

Tom Grant also assert that the suicide note refers in large part to Cobain’s intention of leaving Courtney Love, rather than his intentions to end his own life. Only the last few sentences of the note relate to suicide and it has been speculated that someone other than the singer could have added this part. Handwriting experts have been unable to form a definite opinion on the matter.
One of Cobain’s lawyers also claimed in interviews that the singer had intended on filing for a divorce from his wife before his death and had indicated he wanted to cut her out of his will.
The controversy has been dealt with in several documentaries and books. A documentary film about the case released in 1998 entitled “Kurt and Courtney” concluded that there was not enough evidence to proof a conspiracy theory or that a homicide took place. A book, co-written by Tom Grant in 1999 entitled “Who Killed Kurt Cobain? “was also unable to proof that a homicide took place, but called for a re-opening of the case; a further book by the same authors “Love and Death: The Murder of Kurt Cobain“ followed in 2004.
The true circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Kurt Cobain will in all likelihood remain a mystery but real fans of Kurt Cobain know that he was killed!
