One of the most deadly diseases of the human race is Acquired Immune Deficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is a disease that decreases the body’s effectiveness to fight off illness leaving the individual susceptible to numerous illnesses and diseases and then death.

Current treatments can assist in slowing the disease’s progression, but it cannot be cured. Second only to finding a cure, the question of how aids originated in humans remains to be answered!

To answer the question of origin of Aids, one must look to the research which has tends to focus on two possible scenarios.

First the spread of aids is thought to have begun in the early 1900’s with the first known carriers being chimpanzees. West Central Africa is one of the several areas thought to have had all the requirements for the development and spread of the disease. Present were the carriers or hosts (chimpanzees), a human population in close proximity, and interaction between them of such a nature that it would allow the disease to spread. This is just a theory of course.

From this position it is expected that the transmission began from hunters coming into contact with an infected chimp. This contact would mostly like have been from the infected blood of the host entering open wounds of the human hunter. There is also the fact of the high occurrence of perverts and illiterates in these regions of Africa. These people could have had sexual encounters with these chimpanzees.

Additional considerations that would lend credence to the transmission theory are the environmental factors present at the time. Stress on the human body for a variety of reasons from staving off hunger, hard work in harsh conditions, and possible the use of unsanitary medical supplies such as needles all could have helped to contribute to the development of the disease in the human body.

Over time and repeatedly occurring it would allow the disease to get a foothold in the human population and thus allow the disease to then be transferred from human to human. Originally, and to some extent even now people believe that the transmission occurred from humans having sexual contact with monkeys. While not disproven, many other factors are present that are more probable.

The second area of research and one not as widely known involves several possible origins if it even exists. These vary greatly and include that AIDS was introduced by the government in a bio weapons lab, that it does not exist at all (AIDS Denialism), or that its origin is from promiscuous sexual behavior and drug use. The unfortunate part of this type of thought is that to deny that the disease exists and the research that demonstrates how it is contracted allows the disease to continue to spread and to take many casualties every day!
