Alcohol and Obesity Increase Chance of Liver Cirrhosis Disease

A recent scientific study has revealed that high consumption of alcohol and obesity highly increase the chance of suffering from Liver Cirrhosis disease. Moreover people who drink alcohol drink on a daily basis are more proned to liver disease than those who drink occasionally.

Two separate scientific studies have lead to this conclusion and the result of the studies were recently published by the British Medical Journal.

The first study, done by Dr Bette Liu from the Oxford University consisted of about 1.2 million women as sample and a link was observed by examining the body mass index (BMI) of these women and there chance of having liver disease.

“We found that in middle-aged UK women, being overweight or obese increases the likelihood of developing liver cirrhosis compared with being a healthy weight. Because of the large size of the study, we were able to look at the combined effects of different levels of alcohol consumption and obesity on cirrhosis. We estimate that almost 20% of liver cirrhosis in middle-aged UK women is due to excess weight, while almost 50% is due to alcohol consumption.” said Dr Liu.

The study in fact showed that obese people who also drink alcohol everyday, have more chance of suffering from Cirrhosis. Based on figures from the report, it was also concluded that women who are obese and drink alcohol everyday have 50% more chance of suffering from the disease compared to women who only drink alcohol daily and are not obese.

The 2nd study consisted of a sample of 9000 men in Scotland. The study took about 29 years and it was finally concluded that obese men who drink on a daily basis are eventually victims of this liver disease.

So what can we conclude in a nutshell? If you are obese or over weight and also drink alcohol on a daily basis, then you are really a perfect candidate for the Cirrhosis Disease! Now if you drink daily but exercise a lot and maintain a normal weight, then you are probably on the safe side but still too much of alcohol will eventually ruin your liver. Now even if drink once a week but is obese, you are still a potential victim of the disease.

The best advice: Get rid of that excess weight and useless tissues from your body!
