Skillet is a christian rock band and is one of my favorite among the category. What’s Skillet? It is an eclectic mix of sounds and talent similar to that of a good chef with an array of delicacies all combined to create a new and exciting dish. This analogy is similar to the statement made by lead vocalist and co-founder, John Cooper when he stated the name for the group actually began as a joke.
I discovered Skillet some months ago while listening to an online rock radio. After listening to Awake and Alive, I decided to investigate a bit more about this band. As such today’s Music section of IC is presenting to you an insight about Skillet Band.
The year 1996 saw the forming of a new band known as Skillet in Tennessee. Beginning with only two members, John Cooper and Ken Steorts from other bands who had disbanded, the duo soon decided on the name Skillet. Their different styles of music came together quickly and soon the band was contacted by ForeFront Records, a Christian record label. Members include John Cooper, Korey Cooper, Ben Kasica and Jen Ledger.
Originally part of the grunge era, Skillet would change their persona several times over the next 14 years, and engage in many different sounds. One of their first albums released in 2003 was Collide which was produced by Lava Records. It would be this album that would bring about the groups first Grammy nomination.
Their next Grammy nomination would be for the album Comatose released in 2006. The music presents a distinct Christian Gospel sound and was released to high acclaim. In addition it was presented on the Gospel Music Channel in 2008.
Since 1996 Skillet has released a total of eight albums, each with a different genre and sound. Their most recent album Awake was released in 2009 and was listed at number two on Billboards albums chart. This was a milestone for the band as it is the first time a Christian group debuted so high.

Having established themselves Skillet’s music was everywhere and in some of the least likely places; WWE, the World Series, MTV, and the NFL were just a few of the big names using the group’s music. Skillet continues into 2010 to tour with other big name bands such as Puddle of Mudd and Shinedown.

Reviewing the group’s albums and numerous musical tracks one can hear the distinct sounds from other genres and backgrounds. The music is electric as is the performances by members. It is almost scientific and futuristic though it speaks of feelings and thoughts that have been around for ages. It presents itself to a wide audience whether it is for the music’s sometime pulsating beats or for the meaningful lyrics.
