Utah grade 4 student raises funds for inclusive library books

Provo, Utah (KSTU) – A student at a Utah elementary school urged her school to renovate the library.

Kim Emi wanted to spread a diverse and positive message in her school, which changed the whole neighborhood.

It all started when Emi got interested in a book about a character who looks like her.

9 years old are Hawaii, Polynesia, South Korea, Japan and China.

“Humans, we are afraid of what we don’t know,” Emi explained. “I think that’s part of the reason why we treat people badly based on how they look and what their culture, or what we have learned about their culture.”

Wanting to help people understand her cultural background, Emi broached a subject in her school.

Kim Hawkins, principal of Westridge Elementary School in Provo, Utah, said:

Emi, her mother, and aunt came up with a plan to bring a wider variety of books to the library, but Emi knew bringing a collection would cost money. To offset the cost, Emi launched a lemonade and pastry stand.

She was selling butter mochi, cupcakes, cookies and lemonade. Emi not only made enough money to buy 15 books in her school, but she also had enough money to buy another 60 books in four other schools in the district. I did.

After seeing Emi’s passion and motivation, the Provo School District took Emi’s plans a step further.

“Our district took the step that Emi started and bought all of the elementary school textbooks,” Hawkins explained. “So thanks to Emi, all of our primary schools now have these great books. “

The collection of books that Emi encouraged the district to buy is now called “Emi’s Books”.

Emi hopes to help her learn what she didn’t know before and make sure that others, like her, are reflected in her character.

“I hope all children are inspired to make positive change,” she said.
